An orange haze filled the skies above Davenport, California, on August 19 as the SCU Lightning Complex Fire raged in nearby counties.
Jon Bailiff encountered a scene he described as akin to “armageddon” on his drive from Santa Cruz, while helping a friend retrieve items from a home in the Central Coast region.
He said the “eerie” conditions included a “disturbing mass of dirty red-orange grit and ash.”
