Apple TV Plus Releases First Look at ‘The Problem With Jon Stewart’ (TV News Roundup)
Apple TV Plus released a first look at “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” which launches Sept. 30. The series’ companion podcast will also launch that same day.
Stewart returns to host a television series 16 years after he closed out his run on “The Daily Show.” He jokes about that in the clip, saying, “This is what I look like now.” But this new series is described as a “current affairs series,” rather than a talk show.

In it, Stewart will welcome a wide range of guests from celebrities, such as Jason Alexander, participating in sketches to experts on topics that the struggle for comprehensive veteran care and supporting the working class, and everyday people discussing their personal issues in America. Undoubtedly, healthcare will also come up, as Stewart has spent much of his time over the last few years fighting for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. The podcast will expand upon each episode’s conversation and feature staff members from the show and activists in the space of the topic.
“The Problem With Jon Stewart” is part of Stewart’s multi-year deal with the streamer. He hosts and executive produces through Busboy Productions. Other executive producers are showrunner Brinda Adhikari, alongside Stewart’s longtime manager James Dixon, and Richard Plepler through his Eden Productions, which has an overall production deal with Apple. Chris McShane is co-executive producer, Lorrie Baranek is supervising producer, and Chelsea Devantez is head writer.
New episodes will stream every other week following the Sept. 30 premiere.

National Geographic released a trailer for “The Hot Zone: Anthrax,” which premieres Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. Starring Tony Goldwyn and Daniel Dae Kim, the second season of this anthology series follows those investigating acts of terrorism in which letters containing anthrax were sent to unsuspecting victims in the immediate aftermath of Sept. 11. HBO Max released a trailer for “15 Minutes of Shame,” Monica Lewinsky and Max Joseph’s documentary, premiering Oct. 7. The documentary examines social behavior by talking to individuals who have been publicly shamed or cyber-harassed, while exploring the bullies, media and experts in between. In the trailer, Lewskinsy talks about her journey with cyberbullying, saying, “I was patient zero of having a reputation destroyed because of the internet.” The documentary is executive produced by Lewinsky; Joseph, who also directed; Steve Ascher; Kristy Sabat and Jessica Conway. 42 released first-look images for the four-part series, “The Girl Before,” premiering soon on BBC One and HBO Max. The psychological thriller follows Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) as she moves into a minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect (David Oyelowo). Having to abide by the architect’s strict rules, Jane starts to find shocking discoveries between herself and the previous homeowner (Jessica Plummer). The series is based on JP Delaney’s best-selling novel of the same name. Executive producers are Eleanor Moran, Rory Aitken and Ben Pugh for 42; Ben Irving for the BBC; Delaney and Lisa Brühlmann. The upcoming true-crime docuseries “Meet, Marry, Murder” will deliver a special preview on Amazon Fire TV on Oct. 1, followed by its official Tubi premiere on Oct. 6. Hosted by Michelle Trachtenberg, the docuseries explores the true stories of people who were murdered by their partners. “Meet, Marry, Murder” is from FilmRise and FirstLookTV and is executive produced by Will Hanrahan, Gillian Carter, Danny Fisher and Max Einhorn.

WarnerMedia Kids & Family greenlit “The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie” and “The Amazing World of Gumball: The Series,” both of which are working titles and will premiere on HBO Max and Cartoon Network. The projects, both from “The Amazing World of Gumball” franchise, are the first original productions to be greenlit out of Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, WarnerMedia Kids and Family’s flagship television studio within EMEA. The film follows Gumball’s biggest fan, who finds the show’s missing episode and accidentally opens a portal connecting his world to Gumball’s cartoon world. When meeting his heroes, the superfan teams up with Gumball, Darwin, Anais, Richard and Nicole to save them from a force awakening Emore, while inadvertently unleashing a threat of their own. Ben Bocquelet will direct and executive produce. Sam Register, Vanessa Brookman and Sarah Fell are also executive producers. Shane Mack wrote the script for the film.
DEVELOPMENT
Disney Branded Television announced that Chris Columbus and his 26th Street Pictures partners, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe are developing an action-adventure fantasy series called “House of Secrets.” “House of Secrets” is based on the book series of the same name written by Columbus and Ned Vizzini about a group of siblings who move to a Victorian house once owned by an occult novelist. Ayo Davis, Disney Branded Television’s executive vice president of creative development and strategy, will lead the development of the series.
