Online electricals retailer AO World is expecting to more than double the amount of TVs it sells during the Black Friday event compared to last year, as shoppers binge watch shows during lockdown.

AO World’s chief executive John Roberts said he forecasts the firm will sell over 100,000 TVs during November’s Black Friday where customers can get discounts of 30-35% off some sets.

He told the Evening Standard that demand for entertainment products was currently high. That follows earlier trends seen at the start of the first lockdown in March.

Roberts said early on in lockdown customers flocked to buy bread makers and freezers as panic buying set in. Then there was strong sales of printers and web cams as people got used to working from home.

The update came as AO World, which sells fridges, TVs and laptops online, said sales in the six months to September 30 jumped 53.2% to £717 million.

Roberts said: “We’ve won millions of new customers through the last six or seven months.”

A number of people embraced online shopping for the first time as non-essential retailers had to close physical stores for months due to lockdowns.
