SLIM POLLS | Umno will decide on its candidate for the Slim by-election on Sunday and will officially announce its candidate on Aug 12, said BN secretary-general Annuar Musa.
According to Bernama, Annuar (above) said that BN, Muafakat Nasional, and Bersatu have agreed that a candidate from Umno will contest for the Slim state assembly seat.
During the 2018 elections, Umno won the seat with 44.8 percent of the votes cast, against challengers from PAS (33 percent) and Bersatu (22 percent).
All three parties are now allies in the federal government led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Polling day for the Slim by-election will be on Aug 29, while the Election Commission has also fixed nomination day on Aug 15 and early voting will be on Aug 25.
The by-election will be held in accordance with the standard operating procedures for Covid-19 in place.
The Slim by-election was called following the death of four-term incumbent Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib who passed away on July 15 at 59 years old.
The Pakatan Harapan coalition has yet to make any formal announcements on its candidate with both PKR and ex-premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's 'Bersatu Blackout' faction in the fray.
On July 26, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said he will engage Mahathir in a discussion on this matter.
