Animals cool off from Australian heatwave

An intense heat wave returned to Australia's south and east on Tuesday (December 1), the first day of the southern hemisphere summer, after the country sweltered through its hottest November on record.

Footage obtained by Reuters and taken on Sunday (November 29) showed a koala drinking from a sprinkler and sitting in it to cool off. A seal surprised locals by relaxing in the sands on Sydney's Manly Beach.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) expects temperatures to break records in the coming days due to the heatwave, which has been building across much of the country's outback interior over the last week.
