It may have been hilarious at the time, but Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds feel a little bad now about how their dramatic background kiss stole the spotlight from Ryan Gosling during his 2017 Golden Globes win.

The pair recently reunited for the first time since their awards show smooch as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors video series, where Garfield revealed that he later apologized to Gosling for how they ended up hijacking his celebration.

“I also, retrospectively, felt a little bit insensitive toward Ryan’s moment,” Garfield said of the kiss, prompting Reynolds to confess, “I did too!”

The Deadpool & Wolverine star continued, “But I was grateful that it was in such a wide shot that nobody actually noticed until later, and it was actually kind of perfect, and then you went, ‘Oh, oh, oh.’”

As the story goes, Reynolds and Gosling were both nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical, or Comedy category for their roles in Deadpool and La La Land, respectively. Garfield, who was nominated for his performance in the biographical war film Hacksaw Ridge, suggested the prank while seated next to Reynolds at the event.

“Garfield’s sitting beside me and goes, ‘Hey, if they call your name and you win, don’t kiss your wife [Blake Lively], just kiss me,’” Reynolds recalled. “And, of course, Gosling, who absolutely did not deserve it…”

The 48-year-old, who is known for signature dry wit, couldn't stop himself from laughing at the untrue statement. “I’m actually a genuine, nutty fan of [Gosling’s],” Reynolds admitted, “but he, of course, won for La La Land, as he should, and I love that we were just sitting there like, ‘Eh, let’s just do it anyway.’”

Garfield explained he was glad that Reynolds was “game” for the kiss, but noted that he later reached out to Gosling to make amends for their cheeky behavior. “I was able to apologize to Ryan about that, thankfully,” he said, “and say I’m so, so sorry.”

Reynolds? Not so much. “I actually just egged his house,” he teased as Garfield laughed. “Which is super childish to do, but I didn’t feel so great about losing.”

While visiting The Late Show in 2017, Garfield explained that he kissed Reynolds because he “just wanted Ryan to know I loved him no matter whether he won or lost,” before going on to plant a kiss on host Stephen Colbert

Gosling, on the other hand, has been fully supportive of Reynolds and Garfield’s romance ever since their kiss. “I’m happy for them,” he told Metro UK about the moment in 2017. “I’m happy they found each other.”
