KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Outgoing Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has announced a special public holiday for the state this Monday, if he and his administration continues to be in power.

He said the public holiday will be in effect if the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) pact wins the state election tomorrow.

“With a big heart, I would like to announce that if the collaboration in Selangor made up of PH and BN successfully emerge victorious in the state election this August 12, and forms the state government, we have agreed to announce a public holiday for all our beloved people in the state on August 14,” Amirudin said in a special address broadcast “live” today.

In his address, Amirudin recollected how his state administration had handled the Covid-19 pandemic and how he drew lessons from the traumatic episode which resulted in 37,165 deaths.

“The Covid-19 pandemic taught us to reevaluate our attitude towards the meaning of progress and understand development. At the time, it seemed like ‘a nation at war’. It's just that our enemy is an invisible enemy. The war we are facing has a great impact on society. It requires our cognitive ability, thinking ability and understanding to read direct and indirect effects, immediate and long-term effects.

“It required me and the leadership of Selangor State to always be agile in thinking and implement policies that are future-proof for the welfare of the people of this state,” he said.

Amirudin said while the majority of Malaysians no longer want to look back to reflect on that heartbreaking episode, as the leader of Selangor he had to brave himself to reflect on it in order to tackle it.

‘Whatever examples and lessons I will take, scoop and digest to ensure that if Selangor has to face such a challenge again, we are able to deal with it,” he added.

Apart from the Covid-19 pandemic, Amirudin also pointed to the floods affecting 130,000 families, and said how locals had recovered faster compared to the other states that were also affected.

“Tomorrow is August 12, voters in six states Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor will vote for their respective state governments.

“The state election is very important as it will determine the direction of the state government. I would like to appeal to all the people in Selangor to give victory to the unity government in the state so that we can have continued stability of the state,” he said.

In Selangor, Amirudin will contest the Sungai Tua seat against PN-PAS’ Muhammad Hanif Jamaluddin.

In 2018 general election, Amirudin secured an 11,374 majority for the Sungai Tua seat against BN and PAS.
