Cobby, aka 'Papa', was remembered as a mentor for the zoo's new chimps

and was credited with the smooth introduction of other males to the group

Cobby was a performing chimpanzee

before his placement at the San Francisco Zoo in the mid-1960s

He left no living offspring but beat the odds by living to his 60s

The average life expectancy for chimps is 33 years in the wild

and 50-60 under human care
