‘American Housewife,’ ‘Mixed-ish,’ ‘For Life,’ ‘Rebel’ Canceled at ABC
Comedies “American Housewife” and “Mixed-ish” and dramas “For Life” and “Rebel” have all been canceled at ABC. A cancellation for the comedy “Call Your Mother” was previously announced.
The network also passed on pickups for four pilots, the drama “Acts of Crime” from Sam Esmail and comedies “Adopted,” “Black Don’t Crack” and “Bucktown.” All for projects were produced by the ABC Signature banner.

“American Housewife” has aired five seasons and logged more than 100 episodes at ABC. It stars Katy Mixon, Diedrich Bader, Meg Donnelly, Daniel DiMaggio, Ali Wong, and Carly Hughes. Julia Butters starred in the show’s first four seasons but her role was taken over by Giselle Eisenberg for Season 5.
Rick Wiener and Kenny Schwartz are showrunners of the series. Aaron Kaplan, Rick Wiener and Kenny Schwartz are executive producers. “American Housewife” was created by Sarah Dunn. It is produced by ABC Signature and Kapital Entertainment.
“For Life” has aired two seasons on ABC. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, there are plans to shop the series to other outlets for a potential third season. The show is inspired by the life of Isaac Wright Jr. and was recently awarded the TV Academy Honors, which is reserved for “programs across numerous platforms and genres that elevate complex issues facing society,” per the Academy.
It stars Nicholas Pinnock, Indira Varma, Joy Bryant, Dorian Missick, Tyla Harris, and Timothy Busfield. Hank Steinberg is the creator and executive producer. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson executive produces via G-Unit Film & Television along with Doug Robinson and Alison Greenspan of Doug Robinson Productions. Isaac Wright Jr. and Russell Fine are also executive producers. “For Life” is a co-production of Sony Pictures Television Inc. and ABC Signature.
“Mixed-ish” has aired two seasons on ABC and is a spinoff of the network’s hit comedy “Black-ish,” which was renewed for an eighth and final season earlier on Friday.
It stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tika Sumpter, Christina Anthony, Arica Himmel, Ethan William Childress, Mykal-Michelle Harris, and Gary Cole. Tracee Ellis Ross served as the narrator.
Karin Gist, Peter Saji and Kenya Barris are writers and executive producers. Ellis Ross also executive produces along with Randall Winston, Brian Dobbins of Artists First, Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland of Cinema Gypsy and Anthony Anderson. The series is produced by ABC Signature.
Finally, “Rebel” began airing its first season in April. The series is inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich. It stars Katey Sagal, John Corbett, James Lesure, Lex Scott Davis, Tamala Jones, Ariela Barer, Kevin Zegers, Sam Palladio, and Andy Garcia. The series is executive produced by Krista Vernoff and Alexandre Schmitt of Trip the Light, Brockovich, John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment, Andrew Stearn, Marc Webb and Adam Arkin. It is produced ABC Signature in association with Sony Pictures Television.
As for the pilots, “Acts of Crime” was a high-profile project from “Mr. Robot” and “Homecoming” multihyphenate Esmail that promised to bring a new spin to the traditional procedural. “Adopted” was a single-camera vehicle from Jimmy Kimmel’s Kimmelot banner about a Green Beret, played by Bruce Campbell, adjusting to life outside the military.
“Black Don’t Crack” and “Bucktown” were multicamera comedies. ABC’s “no” calls went out the same day that it ordered three new comedies and a drama for the upcoming season.
