American Horror Story boss Ryan Murphy has set a new record for Netflix with his latest series Ratched.

On Friday (October 16), the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest prequel series, starring Sarah Paulson as a younger Mildred Ratched, became the streamer's most viewed debut season of 2020.

Within in its first 28 days, the show was streamed by a whopping 48 million households.

In Netflix's weekly Top 10 list of streaming programmes, Ratched claimed the top spot for September 14-September 20. Despite premiering on September 18, the show was watched for 972 million minutes by the end of that week.

The biggest ever debut for Netflix currently belongs to The Witcher, which premiered in December 2019. In its opening month, the Henry Cavill-led series was watched by 76 million households.

Ratched will return for another run of episodes on Netflix, having received a two-season order back in 2017. At the time, the streamer announced it had commissioned 18 episodes in total, indicating that the second season will be longer than the first.

It's currently unclear when the next season will arrive, due to the ongoing pandemic, but if production gets underway in 2021, we can probably expect to see it at some point in 2022.

Paulson previously told Variety: "Nobody knows anything about season 2 because Ryan, with the number of things he has going on, who's to know when that's all going to begin? And you throw in the pandemic and then we think well who knows?"
