GEORGE TOWN, March 23 — AMD Global Services (M) Sdn Bhd will be expanding its global business services (GBS) and engineering capabilities in Penang, the company announced in a joint press conference with InvestPenang, Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow today.

AMD Executive Vice President Datuk Devinder Kumar said the new facility in Bayan Lepas will increase the company’s total headcount and capability to support growth across its GBS and engineering expertise.

“We are pleased to partner with InvestPenang today to mark another important milestone in our long-standing business presence in Malaysia,” he said.

This announcement comes just months after AMD’s supplier and partner, TF AMD announced its RM2 billion investment through the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Penang.

Chow said AMD Malaysia was established in Penang in 1972 and today employs over 800 people across two GBS facilities in Penang and Cyberjaya.

“This investment announcement by AMD Global Services today will not only cater for the company’s expansion in an array of existing services provided, such as finance and HR, among others but also includes lab space to conduct engineering activities,” he said.

He said the expansion will be situated at PDC’s RM200 million “GBS by the Sea” building in Bayan Lepas.

The GBS by the Sea building, which is expected to be completed by 2024, includes a nine-storey office building and a six-storey multi-level carpark with a net lettable floor space of about 300,000 sq ft.

AMD Global Services will be taking up about 70 per cent of the space of the building, or about 209,000 sq ft.

“They will be the super major tenant of GBS by the Sea,” Chow said.

He said the state is now seeing an increase in digital economy industries, including GBS.

“Over the past two years, Penang has garnered RM10 billion of approved investments in the services sector, accounting for 11 per cent of the state’s total approved investments in the said years,” he said

He said this showed that Penang is poised to play a prominent role in the national digitalisation agenda.

“With InvestPenang and PDC as the facilitators, the state government is committed to ensure smooth implementation of AMD’s expansion in Penang,” he said.
