Unless you find the act of peeling and chopping veggies meditative, there's a good chance that spending less prep time in the kitchen is considered a win for many home cooks.

While many gadgets over the years have promised to cut down on your cooking time, few have managed to live up to their claims — at least until the Starfrit Pump'n'Slice Chopper & Slicer that is.

This $20 kitchen gadget makes it easy to tackle piles of vegetables, and quickly slices, dices and chops for you.

How does the Starfrit Pump'n'Slice Chopper work?

Think of this Starfrit chopper as your ticket to evenly-sliced fruit and vegetables every time. It features a unique design that uses a high efficiency spring pump and adjustable blades that result in 0.5 to 0.8mm thick slices.

It's a safer alternative to a traditional mandoline, since your fingers don't end up anywhere this chopper's blades. All blades are safely enclosed inside the machine, so all you have to do is set your desired thickness, insert your food into the chute and press down on the pump to achieve perfectly sized slices.

Use this chopper on vegetables and fruits like potatoes, peppers, beets, carrots, zucchini, sweet potato, apples, and more. It's also suitable for deli meats and cheese if you're looking for a quick way to slice and dice.

What shoppers have to say

As a coveted Amazon's Choice product, the Starfrit Pump'n'Slice is a must-have gadget for any chef that's looking to streamline their kitchen. It's also earned a 4.5-star average rating from more than 1,100 Amazon reviews.

Shoppers have shared that this gadget does a great job at creating "matchsticks and paperthin slices." Its tripod base has also been praised for being "stable, solid and easy to pump."

Reviewers have noted that this Starfrit chopper is also easy to store and clean, since all attachments are dishwasher safe and it folds away after each use.

"Most safe mandolin on [the] market," raved one reviewer.

Reviewers have added that while this gadget does take the work out of slicing foods into strips and is "safe for kids," it's not ideal if you're hoping to finely chop and dice.

"Dicing was not my favourite," admitted one reviewer, who shared that it may be "quicker to do it by hand."

Verdict

Despite some of its drawbacks, reviewers agree that the Starfrit Pump'n'Slice is a worthwhile investment at just $20. It's been called a "good product for the elderly," for kids, or for those with limited mobility, since it's a safe and speedy way to chop foods.

Reviewers do note that while it's great at slicing, it won't entirely replace all the knives in your kitchen when it comes to easily chopping and mincing.
