Amazon has knocked $160 off the best external hard drive, the Samsung T5 SSD

Timothy Taylor

While there are several cloud-based services like Google Drive, Mega, and Dropbox that are available for online file storage, nothing beats an external hard drive. Along with providing a sense of security because you can physically hold it and store it for safekeeping, external hard drives nowadays boast larger storage capacity, tinier bodies, and faster write speeds than ever. One such device is Samsung’s T5 SSD, our current pick for the overall best external hard drive. Right now, the Samsung T5 with 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB of memory is on sale at Amazon ahead of Memorial Day for as much as $160 below its usual price.

The Samsung T5 SSD has a slim profile and feels like a solid piece of metal. Even if you give it a good a squeeze, you won’t notice any rattling, moving, or shifting of parts. Samsung claims that this external hard drive can easily survive a drop of about six feet, and we don’t doubt it. Unfortunately, since it’s so tiny (2.3-inches wide and 0.4-inches thick), you might forget that it’s in your pocket and accidentally run it through with the rest of your laundry. On the front of the Samsung T5 is a single USB Type-C port, and it ships with both a USB Type-C cable and a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable so you can plug it into almost any PC. Beside the port is a single LED that’s invisible except when it’s on. It will flash blue when it’s connected, and red when it’s safe to disconnect.

The base unit of the Samsung T5 comes with 500GB of storage space. Despite being quite small, we’ve seen lots of other similarly sized external hard drives that possess the same storage space. What’s remarkable is that the 1TB and 2TB configurations are also housed in the same tiny chassis. This is all thanks to Samsung’s signature V-NAND technology which stacks its memory vertically instead of horizontally so it can fit more storage into a smaller form factor.

For an external SSD, the Samsung T5 is incredibly fast. It manages an impressive write speed of 486 megabytes per second, and an equally impressive read speed of 513MB/s. We encountered zero issues while transferring files back and forth regardless of size, and you can even watch movies or play games right from it. And with an encryption software suite that allows you to lock the drive with AES 256-bit hardware encryption, you’re more likely to find bank vaults that are more susceptible to intrusions. That is if you come up with a really strong passphrase.

The Samsung T5 SSD is a reliable external hard drive that’s plenty durable, extremely portable, and features excellent security and blazingly fast transfer speeds. Get it at Amazon today starting from $90.
