Algerian Protesters Return to Streets in Wake of Movement Anniversary

Thousands of anti-government protesters returned to the streets of Algiers on February 26 to call for change, according to media reports, in the wake of the second anniversary of the pro-democracy movement Hirak, which was February 22.

Video footage shows protesters chanting on Rue Gara Djebilet in Algiers as security forces are seen blocking the road.

Police used tear gas and batons when protesters tried to pass through them to reach a well-known place for anti-government demonstrations, according to reports.

Protests were also underway in other provinces, reports said. Demonstrators are demanding the departure of the ruling elite and a transition toward more democratic governance. Credit: Nahla Djabi via Storyful
