Alexander Isak: Newcastle striker stuns Eddie Howe with ‘incredible’ skill as pundit declares ‘best assist I’ve ever seen’
Newcastle United earned a 4-1 win over Everton on Thursday night, capped off with a sensational set-up by Alexander Isak.
Newcastle have strengthened their grip on a top-four place by condemning Everton to a major defeat. Callum Wilson put the visitors ahead in the first half before a flurry of goals in the final 20 minutes.
Joelinton doubled their lead before Wilson got his second of the night. Dwight McNeil then pulled one back for Everton, but Newcastle had the final say after a sensational dribble by Isak led to a goal for Jacob Murphy.
Isak sent Everton defenders spinning as he whirled down the left wing and weaved in to a central position, poking the ball across for Murphy to finish.
Reacting to Isak’s skill after the match, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe told BBC Sport: “I couldn’t really see what was happening!
“I have seen it back on the telly and the amount of turns and twists and stepovers he did, an incredible piece of skill. He has incredible ball manipulation.”
Meanwhile, controversial former Newcastle striker Michael Owen took to Twitter to label Isak’s moment of inspiration as “possibly the best assist I’ve ever seen.”
Unfortunately for Isak, it hasn’t technically gone down as an assist. Still, he has 11 goal contributions from 21 appearances in his debut season since becoming Newcastle’s record signing.
An ex-Newcastle forward more popular than Owen in the shape of Alan Shearer tweeted his own take, describing the Sweden international’s run as “outrageous”.
Thanks to the 4-1 win, Newcastle are third in the Premier League table on 62 points. They have an eight-point cushion in the Champions League places, since Tottenham drew with Man Utd in a slightly later kick off on the same night.
Howe glad to get Newcastle back to their best up front
Howe said elsewhere in his BBC interview: “A return to goalscoring ways in the last couple of games which is great to see.
“First half was not perfect but second half was very good. We scored some very good goals.
“We knew there would be an aerial challenge for us and I felt we dealt with that very well.
“Second half we really put our foot to the floor and showed what we are capable of.
“It is great to see. Callum was excellent today. The second goal was spectacular. It was great to Alex come on and do well as well.”
In terms of a top-four finish being close, Howe concluded: “I think it is just a case of onto the next game.
“The end table will tell us where we are and what we have next season but for now we are just focusing on the next game.
“We have returned to form in a really good way.”
