Former Netherlands international Rene van der Gijp claims Ajax should’ve accepted the money from Chelsea for Edson Alvarez on deadline day.

Chelsea were adamant about signing a new defensive midfielder on deadline day and they made a €50m offer for the Mexico international, which was turned down.

Alvarez was reportedly frustrated that Ajax rejected the bid from the Premier League side with claims he could earn €50m over a five-year contract.

There were rumours that Chelsea were ready to bring PSV Eindhoven’s Ibrahim Sangare to Stamford Bridge instead but that didn’t materialise.

The Blues finally settled on a loan deal for Denis Zakaria from Juventus with Chelsea owner Todd Boehly taking his summer spend to over £250m with the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

But Van der Gijp thinks Alvarez should’ve been afforded the opportunity to pursue a move to the Premier League with Chelsea unlikely to come back in for him.

“That boy can earn ten times as much, is a Mexican who goes to Chelsea, so he gets a status if he plays there,” Van der Gijp told Ajax ShowTime.

“And there [Chelsea] they are crazy now, because they have a new owner, that American who is totally crazy. They started badly and he just buys Álvarez as a backup for Kante who is 31 and often injured.”

And Boehly isn’t going to come back for Alvarez in the future, according to Van der Gijp: “That club is no longer coming [back]. They are in a panic and they have an owner who is not in his right mind. They’re just doing something at the moment,” he stressed.

“If you can earn €7m in two years at Ajax and he can earn €50m there in 4 years… you can’t do that to a boy like that.”

A move for 33-year-old Aubameyang has raised a few eyebrows but former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher thinks it’s going to be a good signing for Chelsea.

“He’s a quality player, there’s no doubt about that. I think it’s a good signing. People may question Arsenal’s role in this; the fact that they let him go for free, and now Chelsea are paying money for him,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“I think it’s a good signing for Chelsea, but I actually think it was the right decision by Mikel Arteta and Arsenal. Look where they are right now.

“We know what he brings; goals and quality, but at times maybe situations and misdemeanours off the pitch or within the dressing room, and Mikel Arteta couldn’t stand that.

“Thomas Tuchel knows him. He knows him well. He’s worked with him at Borussia Dortmund. As a neutral, I’m delighted he’s in the Premier League. He’s a brilliant player. You don’t want to see players like that leave our league.”
