Airbnb To Work With Local Hosts To Meet Tax Obligations

Airbnb will work with local hosts to help them not only understand, but also meet their income tax obligations.

In fact, it has collected service tax from its hosts in Malaysia, which it sent to the authorities, reported Free Malaysia Today (FMT).

It shared that it had been working with the government on the national short-term residential accommodation (STRA), which will help outline a clear and positive way forward for short-term rental accommodation within the country.

“When implemented, Airbnb will also begin collecting tourism tax on all bookings made via the Airbnb platform,” said the company as quoted by FMT.

It made the statement in response to a call by the Malaysian hotel industry to impose strict regulations on Airbnb operators as well as other STRA operators.

To establish standard STRA practices, Airbnb revealed that it now has a voluntary code of conduct that had been endorsed by the Malaysian vacation rental services management association.

“We have always supported the approval of these guidelines proposed by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation, which we believe are a reference point for local policymakers to consider how best to regulate STRA,” it said.

“We remain committed to providing unique, safe, and family-friendly travel for Malaysians, and are working together with the Malaysian government to help rebuild tourism across the nation,” added Airbnb.

In an Airbnb survey conducted between 1 February and 3 March, a third of the Malaysian host respondents indicated that the money they earned via the online vacation stay and rental platform provided their household with an additional source of income, which helped keep them afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.
