airBaltic CEO on decision to avoid Belarus airspace

airBaltic said in an earlier statement it was avoiding entering Belarus airspace "until the situation becomes clearer" in the wake of the forced landing of a Ryanair jet bound for fellow Baltic state Lithuania on Sunday (May 23).

airBaltic CEO Martin Gauss said the change added around 10 minutes to flight times and the airline wanted to better understand what had happened to the Ryanair flight to ensure safe operation of its flights.

Latvia's transport minister Talis Linkaitis said the forced landing of the aircraft went against international law and the country's aviation regulator would give guidelines to airlines about using Belarus' airspace.
