AHEM, the Met Gala Is Almost Here! Let's Review the Best Looks of All Time
Is it me or does April always feel incredibly long? I’ve been waiting (patiently so, me thinks) and it’s finally time! The Met Gala—aka the Oscars of fashion—is right around the corner. If you’re not familiar with what it is, here’s a lil rundown before we get to the good stuff. The Met Gala (or the Met Ball) is a star-studded charity event that happens every year (with the exception of the pandemic) on the first Monday of every May. Held at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, there’s always a theme that the guests are encouraged to follow which makes for many of fashion’s greatest moments (and memes—tee-hee).
On May 6, our faves (and some of our not-so-faves) will show up and show out in the most fabulous designs following the dress code "Garden of Time" to call attention to the new exhibit theme called “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” On February 15, 2024, Vogue cheekily announced its 2024 Met Gala cochairs, who are none other than *drumroll, pls*: Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya! As the outlet put it, “This year’s cochairs reflect a variety of career achievements, and all have distinct style histories with the Met Gala.”
To kick off all of the fashion feels, I’m taking you into the Getty archives for the ultimate looks (133, in fact) of all time. We’re talking Princess Diana in Dior. Rihanna’s golden gown. Bella Hadid’s revenge catsuit. And oh, this isn’t like any list, no. I’ve not only scrounged up the best looks from the ’80s to now. I’ve also scooped up the behind-the-scenes action, the tea, and background stories that’ll pique your fancy.
PS: I tried really really hard not to make this list Rihanna and Zendaya stan list...but you gotta admit, they’re the queens of the Met Gala (no way am I biased—take it as truth!) Anyway, soak in all this goodness as we await the stars to hit the carpet next week! Also, here’s some more Met content (best and worst dressed, cringeworthy moments, and a list of celebs who have never attended) to keep ya occupied!
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, 2023
At the top of this list comes the fashion killer, the queen:
Rihanna! She paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld at the 2023 Met Gala not only with her jaw-dropping look, but through her lateness. (Apparently, Karl was always tardy, too.) Proving she's forever worth the wait, Rihanna was decked out in larger-than-life flowers and served us in an all-white Valentino ensemble, starring a voluminous skirt with an endless train. If this is what glamorous maternity wear looks like, I want in. Joined by her partner, A$AP Rocky, they closed the arrivals with a bang. Dressed by Gucci, Rocky wore a recreation of a look worn by Karl Lagerfeld that was complete with a suit jacket and tie, plaid skirt, bedazzled jeans, and boots.
Cardi B, 2023
A collar and tie combo with a sweetheart bodice transitioning into a latex ballgown covered in gigantic sculptural rosettes?! Yeah, only Cardi B could pull off this one. Chenpeng Studio is the genius behind it.
Anne Hathaway, 2023
Versace dress, Bulgari jewels. Anne Hathaway did not come to play!!!
Michaela Coel, 2023
Michaela Coel = opulence! She was dripping in Schiaparelli gold and I'm still not okay.
Jenna Ortega, 2023
Wednesday-core but make it couture! Jenna Ortega gave goth glam in Thom Browne.
Dua Lipa, 2023
Tweed ball gown? Yeah, Dua Lipa understood the assignment in this 1992 archival Chanel.
Yara Shahidi, 2023
Um, wow?! Watch out world, she's grown now. The Grown-ish star looked queenly in Jean-Paul Gaultier. Channeling her fave '90s supermodels, the 'fit was half-archival, half-custom and was bedazzled with Cartier diamonds.
Anok Yai, 2023
Best dressed, for sure! Dressed by Prabal Gurung, model Anok Yai was a vision in this gold masterpiece.
Doja Cat, 2023
BIG pur. Of course, Doja Cat would go feline and have a look inspired by Karl's cat: Choupette. Talk about committed! You can thank Oscar de La Renta for this moment.
Halle Bailey, 2023
Our lil mermaid stunned in a sparkling transparent Gucci ensemble. And let's get into that ruffled cape!
Kylie Jenner, 2023
Kylie came in hot with a spicy red gown featuring an asymmetrical neckline, thigh-high slit, and a fabulous cape/train. It was custom—of course—by Jean Paul Gaultier.
Keke Palmer, 2023
Sergio Hudson did it again! Keke wore a custom sequined gown adorned with Swarovski crystals. And how about that pretty blue shawl that doubled as a train?!
Billie Eilish, 2023
No one goes dark like Billie. The black widow vibes was courtesy of Simone Rocha.
Ashley Graham, 2023
Breakfast at Tiffany's but make it an exaggerated, ballet-pink nod to Chanel Haute Couture. This head-turning, dramatic gown was designed by Harris Reed.
Margot Robbie, 2023
Our Barbie's in *gasp* black?! Yes, yes, she is. After a run of monochromatic pink looks, Margot Robbie—the last Chanel ambassador that the late Karl Lagerfeld chose—arrived wearing a recreation of a dress he designed for Cindy Crawford in 1993. The intricate bodice, gold chain straps, and sweetheart neckline was v Chanel.
Naomi Campbell, 2023
Nothing but Chanel perfection for this queen, with a molten pink gown, sequined bodice, and silver arm cuffs.
Gisele Bündchen, 2023
For the first time in 15 years, Gisele arrived solo-dolo (you go, queen) wearing a white silk tulle Chanel dress embroidered with sequined, vertical stripes. She twirled her night away in that feather-y cape, too.
Quinta Brunson, 2023
Baby's first met! Our former cover star, Quinta Brunson, wore an Atelier Prabal Gurung gown and accompanied it with a towering, braided updo, complete with swirling baby hairs.
Billie Eilish, 2022
Remember the time Billie Eilish won the Met? The year was 2022, the theme was Gilded Glamour, and the designer was Gucci. She gave duchess vibes in a satin corset gown that was entirely upcycled.
Gigi Hadid, 2022
I’m very into all of this Versace catsuit and cape action. It’s dark and dramatic so let’s call it “Versace Villain.”
Alicia Keys, 2022
Alicia Keys chose to wear this iconic Ralph Lauren dress and all that was missing was Jay-Z holding a boom box as “Empire State of Mind” blasted through the speakers.
Blake Lively, 2022
Blake Lively stole the night with a majestic, NYC-inspired 2-in-1 gown by Atelier Versace.

A moment! Normani stunned in a black two-piece by Christian Siriano.
Tessa Thompson, 2022
Pretty in pink! Tessa Thompson wore Carolina Herrera to the carpet in 2022.
Gwen Stefani, 2022
I’m not sure if this is giving gilded glamour but Gwen Stefani’s neon-green Vera Wang get-up is G-I-V-I-N-G, nonetheless.
Lizzo, 2022
Lizzo showed out in a hand-embroidered look by Thom Browne. And, of course, her flute.

Chlöe Bailey, 2022
Chlöe went solo in 2022, wearing a sculptural gown by Area and gold wings as a choker.
Olivia Rodrigo, 2022
Olivia Rodrigo served iridescent realness at her first Met Gala. The star wore a liquid purple Versace dress, transparent gloves, platform sandals, and butterfly accessories.
Kylie Jenner, 2022
The reason Kylie went to the Met Gala in 2022 was personal: to honor the late Virgil Abloh. In a vlog posted to her YouTube channel, she shared how she and Virgil talked about doing the Met Gala together for two years. Kylie attended the event with an elaborate Off-White T-shirt wedding gown paired with a veiled snapback, designed by Abloh.
Emily Ratajkowski, 2022

Megan Thee Stallion, 2022
Megan Thee Stallion showed up and out in a golden Moschino gown.
Kim Kardashian, 2021
For the “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” theme, Kim K proved to the world that she is American culture in a head-to-toe body stocking and mask by Balenciaga. Kim confessed that she initially didn’t want to cover her face and “fought against it” but the creative team convinced her and it worked. Even without actually seeing the Kardashian, the world recognized her silhouette—talk about legendary. Kim later captioned an Instagram post saying, “What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!”
Lupita Nyong’o, 2021
Here’s Lupita showing us that even denim can be red carpet worthy when it’s a Versace Jeans Couture gown styled by Micaela Erlanger and accessorized with diamonds via De Beers Jewellers.
Kendall Jenner, 2021
Kendall showed up in a transparent, beaded masterpiece by Givenchy.
Rihanna, 2021
Rihanna and boyfriend A$AP Rocky arrived fashionably late (like, literally—they were last to show up) to the 2021 Met Gala red carpet and stole the show, ofc. While her partner was wrapped in a colorful quilt, she wore an all-black Balenciaga coat and crystallized beanie, symbolic of reclaiming the power of a Black body in a hoodie. Queen Rih dazzled with a BVLGARI statement choker and used Fenty products for the ultimate face beat.

Y’all remember when Zoe Kravitz broke necks when she wore this mesh Saint Laurent dress? Me too.
Yara Shahidi, 2021

Iman, 2021
Iman, the icon, is larger than life in a Dolce & Gabbana x Harris Reid masterpiece.
Keke Palmer, 2021
We love our girl KeKe! For her first year at the Met Gala, she channeled Diana Ross and dazzled us on the red carpet with looks (a turtleneck backless gown by Sergio Hudson) and charm (as a correspondent).
Tessa Thompson, 2021
Tessa was a vision in this voluminous dress by Iris van Herpen at the Met Gala in 2021. Also, how cute are those cowboy boots?

J.Lo showed up in a Ralph Lauren plunge dress which she accessorized with a cowboy hat and Western-like statement pieces. Yeehaw.
Lady Gaga, 2019
For “Camp: Notes on Fashion” in 2019, Lady Gaga gave the world a live show of four entire looks—on the carpet! Surrounded by an entourage of fawning suit-wearing people, she first appeared in a fuchsia hot-air-balloon-like gown by Brandon Maxwell. When that came off, we found her in an asymmetrical black gown...and then, a hot-pink column gown. Next thing ya know, Gaga was in her undergarments pulling a wagon of champagne as she posed and crawled up the stairs.
Lady Gaga, 2019
Ta-da! From the balloon dress to her undergarments, this is Lady Gaga’s final look. The whole show took about 16 minutes. Talk about dedication.
Zendaya, 2019
Remember that time Zendaya was Cinderella at the Met Gala? Accompanied by her stylist fairy godfather Law Roach, she wore a gown by Tommy Hilfiger that grew in volume and lit up in the most magical way. She even carried a pumpkin carriage clutch and left behind a glass slipper for emphasis!
Kim Kardashian, 2019
Kim took the “naked look” to new levels with this custom, waist-cinching corset piece by Thierry Mugler. Sidebar: I never noticed how the beads resemble water droplets!
Kylie Jenner, 2019
Oooh, drama. Like Kendall, Kylie also went for a feather-y vibe that year. Versace designed her a lilac netted gown with very exaggerated feather sleeves. The two sisters photographing together was a visual masterpiece.
Kendall Jenner, 2019
Kendall had all eyes on her in a striking orange feathered dress by Versace. Her hair was slicked back, giving 1920s flapper vibes. Her accessories? Tiffany and Co.

Though she’s on the carpet, this black jumpsuit and larger-than-life puffs aesthetic is only Ciara’s pre–Met Gala look. She strutted down the stairs with Big Freedia to kick off the night.
Ciara, 2019
After her appearance with Big Freedia, Ciara shut it down in this emerald-green Peter Dundas cutout dress. I am living for this ’fro.
Celine Dion, 2019
Apparently, Celine Dion didn’t understand the camp theme but showed up slaying nonetheless! The star wore a metallic fringe Oscar de la Renta dress.

Cardi B, 2019
Thom Browne had Cardi B come through drippin’ in a gigantic blood-red gown with a massive train.
Gigi Hadid, 2019
Gigi gave us chills in this ice queen moment orchestrated by Michael Kors. She’s wearing a metallic catsuit and a matching feathered coat and headpiece. To exaggerate the look, the model even had dramatic silver eyelashes!

Nicki Minaj, 2019
Hip-hop’s Barbie popped out in a Prabal Gurung dress that year.
Jennifer Lopez, 2019
Wearing this glittering Versace dress was extra special to J.Lo since her longtime friend (and Versace’s tailor) Luigi Massi passed away before he could finish the dress. Safe to say it was a slay he would’ve been proud of.
Katy Perry, 2019
LOL, I remember this like it was yesterday. The “Firework” artist lit up the pink carpet dressed as a chandelier, thanks to Maison Margiela.
Rihanna, 2018
Only Rihanna can show up to the Met Gala as a fabulous pope. That year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & the Catholic Imagination.” Makes sense!

Ariana Grande, 2018
How angelic (pun intended) is Ariana Grande in this gown by Vera Wang?

Alien chic meets AI. Cara Delevigne went sci-fi in a glimmering Chanel pantsuit with a nonexistent neckline and a metallic spray painted scalp for the “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” themed event.
Zoe Kravitz, 2017
Pretty sure if Audrey Hepburn were alive in these times, she’d be wearing this Oscar de la Renta dress. Though this gown wasn’t really on theme (for Art of the In-Between), how gorge is Zoe Kravitz in it? PS: It’s made of real (preserved) flowers.
Zendaya, 2017
Queen Z chose to do things her way with a jaw-dropping Dolce & Gabbana ball gown. Love how the tropical parrot print works so well with the carpet, btw.
Bella Hadid, 2017
Revenge dressing took on a whole new meaning when Bella hit the red blue carpet with a new haircut and skintight, see-through catsuit by Alexander Wang, fresh off of a breakup with The Weeknd. Fun fact: She had to be sewn into the look and the material went over her stilettos!

Beyoncé, 2016
Beyoncé took a quick commercial break from the Formation tour to shut down the Met Gala in a studded, barely-there latex gown by Givenchy. After recently dropping the Lemonade album, the superstar hit the carpet alone.

Solange’s pleated “lemonade” dress by David Laport spoke volumes on the carpet. The latex leg warmers were such a cool touch.
Lupita Nyong’o, 2016
The actress wore a brilliant sequined Calvin Klein Collection dress and the topknot of all topknots.
Blake Lively, 2017
Blake Lively’s glam was v Gossip Girl, but her dress (a custom Atelier Versace) was outta this world. The gold detailing is pretty, but omg that surprise mermaid-like feathery train?! It def fit the “Art of In-Between” theme. Xoxo.

Remember when Beyoncé reemerged in this Givenchy dress?! Same. I was in a college dorm when she arrived late and still broke the internet (and our TVs). The theme? “China: Through the Looking Glass.”
Rihanna, 2015
Remember all those pizza memes the internet made of Rihanna’s Guo Pei gown? Same. Only Rihanna could make a gown as thick as my grandmother’s comforter look this good. Apparently, Andre Leon Talley called her “the queen of the night,” but for me, she’s queen of everythang.

“China: Through the Looking Glass” brought us the chicest lil Red Gold Riding Hood I ever did see and she’s in custom Ralph Lauren.
Katy Perry, 2015
Katy wore a graffitied gown by Moschino that had nothing to do with that year’s theme. Also, TEA: Graffiti artist Rime filed a copyright-infringement lawsuit against Jeremy Scott (the creative director) for imitating art that he painted on a Detroit building. Miley Cyrus, 2013
2013 was the year Miley had her twerk sesh on stage, it was also the year the Met had the theme of “PUNK: Chaos to Couture.” Safe to say, Miley nailed it with a netted gown by Marc Jacobs and ofc, signature bleached (and spiked) hair.
Kim Kardashian, 2013
Hey, look, bb Northie is in there! The very pregnant Kim Kardashian is wearing a floral Givenchy gown for her very first Met Gala. She cried all the way home when she caught wind that the internet compared her gown to a couch (remember those memes?!) and how even the late Robin Williams joked that Mrs. Doubtfire wore it better. But now she loves it, so that’s all that matters.
Madonna, 2013
