Officials in Iceland confirmed the eruption of a volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula, located southwest of the capital Reykjavik, on the evening of March 19.
This footage, taken by a Coast Guard aircraft and released by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, shows the eruption in the Geldingardalur Valley area on Reykjanes Peninsula.
The eruption did not come as a surprise. In recent weeks, an uptick in seismic activity has been monitored in the area, leading to expectations of an eruption. Credit: Icelandic Meteorological Office via Storyful
