Firefighters maintained efforts against the combined Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon wildfires burning near Las Vegas, New Mexico, on May 4, which had forced evacuations in San Miguel and Mora counties.

Video posted to Facebook by the Santa Fe Fire Department shows aerial units near the top of a peak on Wednesday, the department said. According to reports, more than 1,200 personnel were on the scene as of May 5.

Officials said the fires were estimated to be 165,276 acres in size (about 258 square miles) and were 20 percent contained.

The fires have displaced more than 6,000 people, mostly in San Miguel and Mora counties, the Las Vegas Optic said on May 4. The paper said more than 160 homes had been confirmed as destroyed, with the actual figure “likely higher." Credit: Santa Fe Fire Department via Storyful
