Aerial Footage Shows Hawaii's Kilauea Spewing Lava Into Lake

Aerial footage recorded by the US Geological Survey captured lava flowing from Kilauea volcano’s crater into a growing lava lake which was as deep as the Washington Monument is tall by Christmas Eve.

The footage, recorded on December 23, shows two active fissures spilling lava, as seen from a helicopter. By December 25, the lava lake was 577 feet deep, scientists said.

Officials have issued a warning about the “deadly consequences” of entering closed areas at the site after the eruption sparked an increase in visitor numbers. Credit: USGS Volcanoes via Storyful
