Aerial footage taken above the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island on December 26 shows a lava lake measuring several hundred feet deep.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) conducted a helicopter flight over the lava in the Halema‘uma‘u crater. This footage shows the lava lake, which by 5.45 pm on Saturday was 580 feet deep, scientists said.
Officials issued a warning about the “deadly consequences” of entering closed areas at the site after the eruption sparked an increase in visitor numbers. The volcano erupted on December 20. Credit: USGS via Storyful
