Aerial Footage Captures Hardened Lava Across La Palma During Cumbre Vieja Eruptions

Lava and smoke plumes erupted from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma as igneous rock coated large areas of the island and formed new land over the ocean, aerial footage taken on October 18 shows.

This footage filmed by Cabildo de La Palma, the Council of La Palma, shows continued eruptions and the extent of volcanic activity between Monday morning to early afternoon.

At least 1,835 structures had been destroyed as of Sunday after lava flows covered 789.6 hectares (about 3 square miles), the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program said. Credit: Cabildo de La Palma via Storyful
