H.E.R. then suggests it would be McKinnon who was performing. The Ghostbusters actress says: “Yes me, it is I who will be musical guest this week.”

Adele then moves towards the camera and say: “Or maybe me". H.E.R. then pushes in front and points at herself.

In a second clip, McKinnon does an impression of Adele’s British accent, saying: “So tune in, it’s fit to be wicked,” before adding: “I’m sorry, bad idea, that was a bad idea, fail.”

Adele replies in an American accent: “Oh my god, no worries girlfriend.”

McKinnon looks at her admiring and said: “OK, now that is good.”

Adele announced her appearance on the US sketch show via social media on Sunday and said she is “so excited” and “absolutely terrified”.

A 2008 appearance on SNL helped boost her career in the US. She described her hosting debut, 12 years after first appearing as a musical guest, as a “full circle” moment.

“Bloooooody hellllll I’m so excited about this!!" she wrote. “And also absolutely terrified! My first ever hosting gig and for SNL of all things!!!!

"I’ve always wanted to do it as a stand alone moment, so that I could roll up my sleeves and fully throw myself into it, but the time has never been right. But if there was ever a time for any of us to jump head first into the deep end with our eyes closed and hope for the best it’s 2020 right?"

She added: "It’ll be almost 12 years to the day that I first appeared on the show, during an election...which went on to break my career in America, so it feels full circle and I just couldn’t possibly say no! I am besides myself that H.E.R will be the musical guest!! I love her SO much I can’t wait to melt into a flaming hot mess when she performs, then confuse myself while I laugh my arse off in be-tween it all."

The hosting gig has sparked speculation she is ready to release new music.

It has been five years since the release of Adele’s most recent album, the Grammy-winning 25.
