Adam Doleac is going to be a dad!

The "Biggest Fan" singer, 35, and wife MacKinnon are expecting their first baby together, a rep for the couple confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

Speaking about the baby news, the couple says it was "a little bit of both" a surprise and part of the plan to learn of their upcoming arrival.

"Ever since we met and been together in our relationship, we've always wanted to have kids for sure," Adam tells PEOPLE. "So that part wasn't a surprise, but it did happen a little quicker than we thought it might, but we're both really excited it did."

Adam and MacKinnon joked about the elaborate way she'd one day share baby news with him, but her shock in the moment made for a different scenario.

"We were obviously wanting to start a family and super excited. I know that Adam always had this idea that I'd have this really special, elaborate way to tell him that we're pregnant," the mom-to-be says.

"But because it was such a shock, I didn't really tell him I was taking a test. I thought for sure it was going to be negative, so then I ended up coming downstairs while he was watching a football game."

"I was like, 'Babe!' and he turned around and I handed him the pregnancy test," she laughs. "Not as cute and sentimental as we thought, but that's probably just because I was in shock."

The baby news comes as the newlyweds recently enjoyed their first anniversary, which has been "really special" for the couple to experience.

"I think marriage has been our favorite part of the whole entire thing so far," Adam says. "We've been together for almost seven years, so it's been really special to kind of start over in that way, with getting married and now our celebrating our one-year anniversary. Then, obviously, adding a child into the mix is super special. It's got to be really exciting and kind of changes the way you think about everything."

MacKinnon enjoyed an easy ride the first few weeks of pregnancy, noting her worst weeks were "five through nine."

"But talking to some friends, I did not have it nearly as bad as I could have," she says with gratitude. "I never got really, super sick. I was just extremely tired and couldn't really keep food [down]. It also happened over the course of Adam being in Montana for three weeks, so the timing was not super ideal."

More recently, she's been feeling "really good," noting pregnancy is a "very wild feeling."

"I've always wanted to be pregnant, wanted to have kids, always been envious of like moms with pregnant bellies, friends with pregnant bellies. But It is wild, just every day you wake up and you're like, 'Wow, i'm growing a human,'" she says. "It's been really awesome and I can't really complain."

Some of the couple's favorite moments recently have been sharing the news with their close friends and family after "keeping it close to the vest" for the first half of the pregnancy.

"We have really enjoyed having a little bit of a secret from the world for 25 weeks. I know a lot of people announce really early, but we've made it a point to tell people with big, dramatic, romantic kind of things," Adam says.

"When we told our parents, we came up with different really cool, unique ways. For my dad, he loves to listen to new demos of songs that I've written, so I acted like it was a demo, and me and MacKinnon actually recorded a message for my family telling them we're pregnant," the singer shares.

"For her mom and dad, we got a waiter to write it on a dessert plate when we were out to dinner one night," he adds. "So we've had fun with telling people different ways."

Now that their news is out in the open, the two are looking forward to seeing each other flourish in their new roles as mom and dad.

"I think Adam is going to be an incredible dad," MacKinnon says. "I feel like people see the musician, and I obviously get to see him at home, enjoying his normal daily life. The way he takes care of me and our dog is super special, so I can't wait to see him hold the baby and be with the baby."

"It's something we've both always talked about and dreamed of," Adam adds. "I think a lot of my favorite qualities of MacKinnon are how honest and loyal she is. She's the biggest team player I've ever seen in my life. So, I'm excited to see all of my favorite qualities in her come out even more as a mom. I've always imagined what a great mother she's going to be, and now I'll get to watch it happen and be right by her side the whole time."

Right now, the two are having fun figuring out their nursery and building up their registry list as they prepare for their next season.

"Adam isn't one of those husbands that doesn't care. He definitely has an opinion and has a say," MacKinnon says. "So it's been fun putting that together."

The singer is enjoying slowing down as he prepares for fatherhood and tons of new music to come.

"We've kind of wrapped up for this year, which is great. We have a couple of months that are a down period where we can all enjoy family and the holidays. I've got a lot of my second record done. I only got to release three songs last year, which was kind of a bummer for me and my opinion, not nearly enough. So I plan on releasing 10 to 12 songs maybe almost a song a month, next year to kind of catch up, which is really exciting for me."

Adam has until February to prepare to hit the road again, this time on his second headlining tour, some dates of which have been switched around to accommodate their new arrival in March.

"I'm excited to get back out there," he says. "The first headlining tour went really well, and we've only gotten bigger and better since then so I'm excited for this one."

One day, Adam hopes that MacKinnon and their little one will be joining him on the road.

"We talk about it all the time. The music industry is tough and unpredictable and anything but easy, but it's definitely our dream to be able to bring a separate bus out and tour the country with our little family," Adam says.

"I know if the fans had their way, MacKinnon would be at every single show. I think she has more fans than I do," he laughs. "But we love being able to do that together. Our communication, our lives are just easier and better when we are able to be together."

"We're praying and trying to manifest that time together with our family, and that this music coming out is going to lead us to that point where we get to have those experiences together."
