SINGAPORE — In the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, some countries are beginning their initial stages of reopening industries, businesses and services. At the same time, they are implementing numerous safe distancing, safe management measures in order to protect the public from being infected by the coronavirus.

With the disruption this crisis is having on the fitness industry, sports review site RunRepeat.com conducted a survey on gym members to learn if they plan to return to gyms upon reopening, and whether they will be keeping their memberships or not.

The site surveyed 10,824 gym members from 116 countries between 24 April and 1 May, 6,636 of which were US-based.

What they found was that nearly half of all gym members globally (46.67 per cent) will not return to their gyms upon reopening. More than a third of them (36.57 per cent) have already canceled or are considering canceling their memberships.

Upon further breakdown of the results, RunRepeat found that the percentages were higher for gym members in the Southeast Asia region – 61.67 per cent of them will not return to their gyms when they reopen, while 51.67 per cent of them have already canceled or are considering canceling their gym memberships.

“Clearly, there is significant unease about returning to the normal routines of working out at gyms to the point where the region could potentially lose more than half of its members,” RunRepeat told Yahoo News Singapore.
