SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Thursday (5 August) reported 98 new COVID-19 cases in Singapore, taking the country's total case count to 65,508.

The MOH also announced Singapore's 40th COVID-19 related fatality, a 79-year-old Singaporean man. It is the third such death here in less than a week.

There are 96 new locally transmitted infections, of whom 38 are unlinked. The ministry did not provide a breakdown of how many of them are in the community or are dormitory residents.

Among the local cases are two patients above the age of 70 who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, and are at risk of serious illness.

Also detected were two imported infections, of whom one was detected upon arrival here, while one developed the illness during their stay-home notice or isolation period.

Ten new clusters were announced on Thursday, bringing the total number of active clusters to 122. All of them are named after case numbers and are altogether linked to 33 cases. The MOH did not provide any details on the cases the clusters are named after.

The "Case 67226" cluster has been renamed to North Bridge Road Market & Food Centre with three new cases added to it, now linked to eight infections.

Twelve new cases were also added to Singapore's largest cluster at the Jurong Fishery Port, now linked to 1,127 cases. No new cases were added to the second-largest cluster, linked to various KTVs, which has 252 cases.

One new case was added to the Westlite Mandai Dormitory cluster, now linked to 10 infections.

The MOH said that the number of new cases in the community has decreased from 881 in the week before to 723 in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has increased from 223 in the week before to 228 in the past week.

It added that the seven-day moving average number of all linked community cases and all unlinked community cases are 70.7 and 32.6 respectively.

The ministry on Wednesday announced that visitors to all hospital wards in Singapore will be barred from Thursday through to 18 August following the detection of more COVID-19 cases in the community.

40 require oxygen supplementation; 8 in ICU

At least 63,457 cases in Singapore, or over 99 per cent of the overall total, have fully recovered from their infection and have been discharged from the hospital.

As of Thursday, 577 cases are currently warded, most of whom are well and under observation.

There are currently 40 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen supplementation and eight in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Eight among the 48 cases are fully vaccinated – five require oxygen supplementation while two require ICU care as they have underlying medical conditions, said the MOH.

Among them are also 36 patients above the age of 60, of whom 31 are completely unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, who have fallen very ill, it added.

Apart from the 40 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.

Over the last 28 days, 80 local cases required oxygen supplementation, were admitted to the ICU, or died. Of them, 48 are unvaccinated, 24 are partially vaccinated and eight are fully vaccinated.

As of Wednesday, about 7.83 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered under the national vaccination programme. Some 4.34 million have received at least one dose of the vaccine, with some 3.62 million having completed the full vaccination regimen.

This means that 65 per cent of the population have completed their full regimen, or received two doses of COVID-19 vaccines under the national vaccination programme, and 78 per cent have received at least one dose.

Those who have received the Sinovac's CoronaVac vaccine locally are not included in Singapore's national vaccination numbers. As of Wednesday, 115,970 doses of the China-made vaccine have been administered to 77,095 individuals.
