Many parents in Singapore would go to the ends of the earth for their kids, even doing their best to maximise the chances of getting a spot in a top primary school for a good head start in life — in this case, a good boys’ primary school.

Mr Andrew Nair, Associate Division Director at ERA Realty, says his clients often ask him the following questions and more:

  • “What are the good schools?”

  • “What are MOE’s guidelines?”

  • “How far do I have to live from the school?”

One way to get your child into your preferred primary school is to make sure you are staying nearby.

According to the Ministry of Education on its website, “priority is given to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents who live closer to the preferred school when balloting”.

Priority admission is given in this order:

  1. Singapore Citizens (SC) living within 1km of the school.

  2. SCs living between 1km and 2km of the school.

  3. SCs living outside 2km of the school.

  4. Permanent Residents (PR) living within 1km of the school.

  5. PRs living between 1km and 2km of the school.

  6. PRs living outside 2km of the school.

  3. Key in the postal code of the property you’re interested in into the MOE Distance tool. This will generate a list of schools in the area (try to search for a more specific address, not just the development name else the search on the MOE website may not succeed)

Other Considerations Before Moving

In addition to sussing out choice schools and the properties nearby, buyers also have to balance other factors such as their budget, size of their new home and availability of units.

Says Mr Nair: “Most elite schools are in very prime property areas. With that comes prime prices, and most families that we talk to will have to downgrade in terms of size. They will have to figure out how to manage the family with a smaller space. If demand outstrips supply, there may not be ‘choice’ units available and the family might have to stay in a unit that they may not like.”

In addition, staying near your kids’ preferred school does not immediately guarantee you a place in the school. If you can’t get into the school of choice and have no alternative options nearby, that could mean facing a “lock-in” period of at least three to five years. Tip: You might also want to write in directly to the school to appeal.
