Since 2018, 9-1-1 has chronicled the lives of Los Angeles first responders — and there's much more in store for them.

Centered around the fictional firefighters and paramedics at Station 118 of the Los Angeles Fire Department, the ABC series follows their lives at work and at home, along with the police officers and 911 dispatchers they work closely with.

“Being a part of this comic book come to life about first responders, has been really fun. Because we go through things that some people wouldn't necessarily survive, but that's the language of the show," Peter Krause told PEOPLE after the season 7 finale. "It is about perseverance and redemption and moving forward and having family and supporting each other. All these themes are underneath the splashy entertainment."

On-screen, Bobby (Krause) and Athena (Angela Bassett) finally headed out on their delayed honeymoon cruise at the start of season 7, but trouble soon followed them onto the seas.

While Bobby and Athena faced choppy waters in their marriage even after returning to L.A., Chimney (Kenneth Choi) and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) finally got to say, "I do," despite a medical complication halting their original plans. Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms) were initially closed off from becoming foster parents again until they met Mara and decided to give it another try.

Season 8 of 9-1-1 will be the second to air on the alphabet network after seasons 1 through 6 ran on Fox for five years. Bassett, who also serves as an executive producer alongside costar Krause, shared her excitement about the renewal news on Instagram.
