[Climber, Nick Gardner]
"I'm Nick Gardner, I'm 81, and last year I decided on the challenge."
"The challenge was to climb all the Scottish mountains, which were over 3000 feet. There's a list of them and they're called Munros."
Location: Ballachulish, Scotland
This man is climbing hundreds of mountains in honor of his wife
Gardner and his wife Janet moved to Scotland years ago
but she became ill with Alzheimer's and osteoporosis
"When it got too much for me to handle, when she went into hospital and care and it just knocked me for six completely. I just didn't know what to do. // "We've been used to each other's company all 24/7 for 30 years. And then suddenly, it's gone."
Gardner began climbing as a way of coping
"I thought right, I'll climb all the Munroes starting as an 80-year-old."
The task he set himself would challenge many half his age:
to climb all 282 of Scotland's ‘Munros’ in 1,200 days
"Once I arrive, then it's immediate.""Any other problems seem to disappear into insignificance."
Gardner records his progress on Facebook and Instagram
He’s raised over $40,000
for charities helping those with Alzheimer's and osteoporosis
