An 8-year-old girl in Georgia was hit by a car as she attempted to get on a school bus, reports Fox 5, 11 Alive and WSB-TV 2. As of Friday evening, the victim remains in critical condition, reports WSB-TV 2.

The Rock Spring Elementary school student was crossing the street when she was struck by a 25-year-old woman. The suspect was driving a Ford Fusion on Thursday in Henry County, Ga., reports 11 Alive. Neither the victim nor the driver’s names have been released by the Georgia State Troopers (GSP).

GSP reported that the bus was on Jackson Lake Road in the northbound lanes. The bus activated both stop signs in the front and rear, and red flashing lights indicated the vehicle stopped for passengers to enter. As the victim crossed the street, the driver allegedly struck the child.

Emergency medical personnel performed a "life-saving measure" before she was flown via helicopter to Egelston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta, reported the GSP.

The driver remained on the scene; however, there is no information about whether or not the woman was arrested. The GSP began an investigation into the accident, which remains ongoing, reports Fox 5.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the student and family, and we are working to provide support to the school community,” said the Henry County school district, reports WSB-TV 2.

“It’s crazy to think about something like that happening to a child when you have kids. Well even if you don’t have kids. It’s very, very sad to hear about. But I can just imagine what those parents are going through,” Lindsay Bridges, a mother of two Rock Spring Elementary students, told WSB-TV 2.

“I’ve seen so many situations where there are buses and these cars, they’re dropping off the students and they’re flying around,” Bridges said. “And I’m like trying my best to stay in my vehicle and not shout at like what are you doing.”

“It breaks my heart. Breaks my heart for her mother. I mean her whole family,” explained another parent, Kelly Folds, reports WSB-TV 2.

“For somebody to be in that much of a hurry that you can’t wait a few minutes. Not even a few minutes," added parent Richard Williams, reports WSB-TV 2.
