8 arrested in Laos after 6 tourists died from suspected methanol poisoning
Officials arrested eight hostel workers in Laos on Monday for allegedly poisoning travelers with methanol, according to reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
Tourists reported illnesses after consuming alcohol in the town of Vang Vieng, a popular backpacking destination. Police believe their drinks contained methanol, which is considered a biodegradable fuel. The colorless and odorless chemical compound is sometimes used to stretch alcoholic beverages at bars.
Bianca Jones, 19, died at a hospital in Thailand after consuming the tainted alcohol.
She was transported out of Laos for treatment due to the severity of her condition, according to The Associated Press. Her friend Holly Bowles also died from similar complications. Both were from Australia.
The British government released a statement pronouncing Simone White, 28, dead, also citing suspected methanol poisoning.
New Zealand, Denmark and the United States have also reported citizens dying from methanol poisoning after visiting the remote town.
“Australian officials in Laos and Thailand are working closely with local authorities. Investigations are underway and we are offering any assistance we can provide,” the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
