  • Walking daily helps him feel great.

On Tuesday, August 20, Al Roker turned 70—and he feels “better than I have in years,” he proudly stated on Instagram. Roker shared the proclamation in one of his beloved walking videos, and he said he has his online community to thank for helping him stay at it into his seventh decade.

“It’s all part of the Start Today program,” he said in the clip, referencing Today’s walking group for healthy living. “Getting out, getting moving, adding to what you’re already doing. You do what you can. Doing something is better than nothing. And I gotta tell ya, all of you have contributed to this.”

Over the years, Roker’s health journey has been a rollercoaster, with stops at gastric bypass surgery, cancer treatment, and hospitalization for life-threatening blood clots. After each valley, he has bounced back with an even tighter focus on his goals.

In 2022, he began walking daily, which helped him lose 45 pounds. And still today, he aims to get at least 10,000 steps per day. “I have now had 186 days in a row of 10,000-plus steps,” he recently told Women’s World. Even while covering the Paris Olympics, he got them in.

“I wake up about 4 o’clock to do our weather stuff, so by 4:45 I’ve talked with my meteorologist, and we’ve gone over what we want to do, so then I do a couple miles on the treadmill before I get started,” he shared with Women’s World. “Now, as it’s staying lighter later and earlier, I try to get a half-hour to 45-minute walk in Central Park and back again. Some days I’ll walk home from work. It’s not like an active walk. It’s more like a stroll or sashay, a promenade if you would.”

Whatever works to keep him as chipper as he is at 70. And he’s not mad about the number, either, he recently said on Today. In fact, he thinks “age brings whoever you are into sharper relief.” And we would have to agree.

Happy birthday, Al!
