Home and Away spoilers follow from this week's Australian-pace episodes, which some UK readers may prefer to avoid.

Home and Away is hotting up as we begin the build-up to the show's season finale at the end of the year, with Colby Thorne's dark storyline now gathering pace and the Parata family facing potential danger.

Here are seven big questions we've been left with after the latest episodes.

1. Has Dean lost Jai for good?

Dean fears that his parenting journey has reached an abrupt end, as Amber has decided to take their son Jai away from Summer Bay without any warning. After weeks of rows and tension, Amber decided that it was better for Jai to be raised by her – and her alone – until he's older.

Dean was devastated by this decision, fearing that Jai would always see him as a deadbeat dad even though it wasn't his choice to lose contact. It was also a stark reminder that life is never easy for the Mangrove River crew, no matter how hard they try to turn their lives around.

An emotional Dean seemed sure that Amber wouldn't change her mind anytime soon, especially after she promised to give Jai the option to track him down again when he's older. Fortunately for Dean, it may not be the last we've seen of Amber and Jai.

2. Can Colby win back Taylor?

Colby's secret affair finally backfired on him this week, as Angelo revealed that he knew all about his wife Taylor cheating on him with his corrupt colleague. As Angelo confronted the cheating pair separately, he tried to make Taylor see that Colby was only interested in her because he wanted to keep tabs on the Ross investigation.

Taylor soon realised this was true and that Colby really did murder his abusive stepfather. Understandably, she was pretty ticked off over this and tried to cut ties with Colby for good.

Home and Away fans know that, regardless of his initial intentions, Colby later developed genuine feelings for Taylor. Does this mean there's still hope for them if Colby gets a chance to explain himself? Let's face it, forgiving murder will be a big ask...

3. How much danger is Tane in?

Home and Away returned to one of its favourite themes this week – an evil gang making dark threats of violence and revenge. If only Robbo were still around to offer some advice on how to handle it.

Tane has found himself in trouble with a group of criminals as a result of his recent dodgy activities. When he returned to the Bay, he'd been attacked by his enemies and had to be rushed to hospital.

Tane needed to relocate the stolen van that he briefly stored at the garage and the Astonis' house, as the vehicle's panels had an expensive supply of drugs secretly stashed behind them. Unfortunately, Willow and Ziggy had already taken care of the van to get rid of it.

Now owing money to his shady contacts, Tane was given a two-day deadline to come up with $25,000.

Tane was warned that he and his family would face the consequences if the deadline wasn't met, so the big question now is whether he'll be able to come up with the cash – and what the consequences may be if he can't.

4. Will Nikau and Bella really leave?

For Nikau, all signs are pointing to a fresh start in New Zealand being his best move for the future. Nikau's mum Gemma has decided to stay in New Zealand rather than returning to the Bay, while the move would also put Nikau out of harm's way if Tane's enemies turn any nastier.

Although Nikau's girlfriend Bella initially declined to join him when he makes the move, she changed her mind after the latest drama surrounding Colby's affair.

The Summer Bay teens seem set to make a fresh start together, but could the next stage in the Ross investigation derail their plans?

5. What happened to Owen?

Roo and Owen's relationship seemed strong when they left Summer Bay together a few weeks ago, but their time away appears to have done much more harm than good. Roo shocked her loved ones by returning alone and stubbornly refusing to be drawn on what had happened with Owen.

The only details Roo did let slip were that things hadn't worked out between her and Owen, which led to them parting ways.

Roo now has no idea where Owen is and doesn't want to discuss it any further – which Marilyn, Leah and Alf all quickly discovered when she refused to answer any of their questions. How long will it take for Roo to open up over why it all went so wrong?

6. What will happen to Justin?

Justin began a course of radiotherapy this week, knowing it'd be a tough journey as the doctors work to shrink the tumour on his spine. He also faced tensions with Leah, not wanting her to fuss around him as he faces this difficult time.

The couple had got their relationship back on track by the end of the week, but the situation took a worrying turn when Justin suddenly collapsed one morning and was advised to go to hospital for another scan. Will he be okay?

7. Who betrays Colby?

Home and Away also ended the week with a tantalising tease for the future, which didn't appear in the main show but in a trailer looking ahead at upcoming episodes.

The show has confirmed that a mystery person, known only as Witness X, will come forward with information about Colby's crime – leading to his arrest. The person in question seems to be someone close to Colby, but who would betray him after such a long cover-up?

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 7pm on Channel 7 (Australia).
