7 celebrity looks from the Met Gala that missed the mark — sorry

  • The 2024 Met Gala was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday.

  • The theme was "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," and the dress code was "The Garden of Time."

  • Some celebrity looks were underwhelming, while others pushed boundaries — for the wrong reasons.

The Met Gala returned for its 2024 installment on Monday.

Fashion's biggest night, organized by Vogue's editor in chief Anna Wintour with the help of cochairs Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, and Chris Hemsworth, took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It brought together celebrities and famous faces from entertainment, fashion, business, and tech, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sánchez.

Some of the best-dressed guests made a splash in attire aligned with the "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" theme and "The Garden of Time" dress code, but others didn't pull off their looks as flawlessly.

Here are seven Met Gala looks from this year's event that missed the mark — sorry.

Doja Cat turned heads in a wet T-shirt dress, but her reasoning for wearing cotton left fans divided.

In a sea of gowns covered in floral motifs, Doja Cat stood out in her white T-shirt dress designed by Vetements that was drenched in hair gel. The singer completed the look with mascara dripping down her face.

On the red carpet, Doja Cat told Entertainment Tonight that she chose her look because she figured many guests would be interpreting the garden theme literally.

"I know that people are going to do flowers, but my flower of choice is the most-used flower. And it's cotton," Doja Cat said. "I wanted to do a white T-shirt, also because a white T-shirt is timeless."

Some fans pointed out on social media that cotton, even though it's harvested from Gossypium flowers, is a plant.

Chris Hemsworth's cream summer suit didn't seem to reference the Met Gala's theme.

Style expectations are slightly higher for Met Gala co-chairs, which is why Hemsworth's monochrome Tom Ford suit felt a bit like a letdown.

Unlike Hemsworth's fellow co-chairs, Zendaya and Bad Bunny, the "Thor" star's ensemble didn't make an obvious reference to the event's theme.

Any nod to fairytale or garden motifs — perhaps with something as simple as floral appliques — might've helped elevate the look.

Zoe Saldaña's boho dress felt more suited for a summer festival than the Met Gala.

Saldańa wore a camel-colored semi-sheer Chloé dress that screamed boho. She paired it with glossy brown boots and accessorized with a gold belt with the name of the fashion house.

The "Avatar" star looked chic, but the ensemble felt a little too casual for fashion's biggest night. If this were a roundup of the best looks celebrities wore to a music festival like Coachella, for example, she would make the list.

Rita Ora wore a curtain-style beaded dress that would have benefited from different styling.

Ora wore a Tom Ford dress made out of a cascading assortment of colorful beads that she told Vogue date back to the first and second century BC.

The age of the beads spoke to the time element of the evening's theme, which Ora should get credit for.

But the combination of the wet hair look, and the noticeable nude-colored bodysuit worn beneath the beaded dress felt jarring. Keeping her hair simple and adding more beads to create a fully-formed dress would've helped Ora hit the mark.

Tom Ford's suave red velvet suit jacket was impeccable but not obviously on theme.

Surprisingly, Ford did not wear an outfit from his eponymous brand. Instead, his tuxedo is by Anthony Vaccarello of Saint Laurent.

While Ford deserves praise for not donning a classic — but boring — black suit, it would have been nice to see the designer give a more obvious nod to the theme of the night.

Wearing an archival look or incorporating references to the passage of time or gardens would've helped.

Cara Delevingne's bedazzled top and ivory skirt nailed the Met Gala theme — from 2018.

The British model wore a Stella McCartney ensemble with a high-waisted ivory skirt and a sparkly hooded top made from lab-grown diamonds.

She looked ethereal, but the look, reminiscent of a high-fashion Templar knight, felt more fitting for the 2018 Met Gala, whose theme was "Heavenly Bodies."

Troye Sivan's deconstructed Prada suit felt a little safe.

The "Rush" singer wore a Prada ensemble inspired by a look from the brand's 2008 fall menswear collection, which spoke to the "Reawakening Fashion" part of the theme.

But the baby blue-and-black color palette felt underwhelming and safe for Sivan, who usually isn't shy about taking fashion risks on the red carpet.

Like others on this list, he could've incorporated a brighter hue or floral motifs to reinvent the iconic Prada look in a more memorable way.
