A collision between a moped and a backhoe killed a 61-year-old man in the Newfoundland community of Dunville on Friday, according to the RCMP. (David Bell/CBC)

A 61-year-old man is dead after the moped he was riding collided with a backhoe, according to the RCMP.

Police received word of the crash shortly after 3 p.m. NT on Friday, according to a news release issued Monday, which happened at the intersection of Main and Greenhouse roads in Dunville, N.L., — about eight kilometres from Placentia.

The driver of the backhoe wasn't injured, but the moped driver was taken to hospital and died from his injuries a few hours later, according to the release.

Police say they're investigating the crash.
