60 percent in new survey say Biden not fit to serve another term

More than half of Americans surveyed said President Biden is “not fit” to serve another term in the Oval Office, according to a poll released Tuesday amid the fallout from his lackluster debate performance last week.

Sixty percent of Americans polled in the latest YahooNews/YouGov survey said Biden is not fit to serve another term as president, while just 24 percent said he is fit and 16 percent said they are not sure.

Trump did better among respondents, with 46 percent saying the former president is unfit for another term in the Oval Office and 43 percent saying he is fit. Approximately 11 percent said they were not sure.

The results come nearly a week after Biden’s shaky showing in the first presidential debate of the 2024 general election. Biden, 81, appeared to stumble over his words during Thursday’s debate and looked like he lost his train of thought at times. His voice was raspy for a good portion of the 90-minute debate, and his delivery frequently halted.

Of the 1,754 adults surveyed, just more than half — or 56 percent — said they watched the debate, while 44 percent did not. Out of those who did not watch the debate, 18 percent said they watched “enough” video clips afterwards to form an opinion of the duo’s performance.

Of those who either watched the debate or clips of it afterward, most said Trump was the winner; 56 percent chose the former president, while 15 percent chose Biden and 14 percent said it was a tie, per the poll. About 17 percent said they were not sure.

The poll is the latest bad news for the president, who faces a flurry of concerns from some within his own party over his ability to beat Trump in November and effectively lead the nation for the next four years.

Biden already clinched the Democratic nomination by winning a majority of delegates, and he has maintained he does not intend to drop out of the 2024 race.

While the latest polls signal doubts over Biden’s ability for a second term, pollsters found he still remains neck and neck with Trump in a head-to-head match-up, trailing by 2 points, 45 percent to 43 percent. About 7 percent said they were not sure, and 5 percent said they would not vote.

When asked who has the best chance of winning the 2024 election, 25 percent of participants said Biden, and 45 percent said Trump, per the poll.

The YahooNews/YouGov survey was conducted June 28 to July 1 among 1,754 adults. It has a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.

And they had probably dreams and hopes; the less and less, I fear today, unfortunately," said Andrea De Domenico, head of the UN humanitarian office in the Palestinian territories."People who in the last nine months have been moved around like pawns in a board game."- Evacuation order -The United Nations says up to 250,000 people were affected by Israel's order to evacuate 117 square kilometres (45 square miles) -- equivalent to one-third of Gaza's territory.The Israel-Hezbollah border clashes have killed at least 496 people in Lebanon, most of them fighters but also including 95 civilians, according to an AFP tally.Israeli authorities say at least 16 soldiers and 11 civilians have been killed on their side of the UN-patrolled border.The Gaza war at the heart of the violence has meanwhile raged on, with gun battles, air strikes and shelling rocking Gaza City for an eight straight day.Israeli troops "destroyed tunnel routes in the area and eliminated dozens of terrorists in close-quarters combat with tank fire, and in aerial strikes," the military said.- 'Maelstrom of human misery' -Israel has faced an international outcry over the soaring civilian death toll, punishing siege and mass destruction in Gaza.The UN humanitarian coordinator for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, this week called for an end to the "maelstrom of human misery".Netanyahu has insisted Israel will destroy Hamas and bring home the remaining hostages.Biden, under growing domestic pressure over Washington's support for Israel, in late May outlined a roadmap for a six-week truce and exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners.There has been little progress since, but Hamas said Wednesday it was communicating with officials in Qatar and Egypt as well as Turkey with an eye to ending the conflict.Hamas said its Qatar-based political chief Ismail Haniyeh had "made contact with the mediator brothers in Qatar and Egypt about the ideas that the movement is discussing with them with the aim of reaching an agreement".Netanyahu's office said Wednesday that "Israel is evaluating the (Hamas) remarks and will convey its reply to the mediators".The main stumbling block so far has been Hamas's demand for a permanent end to the fighting, which Netanyahu and his far-right coalition partners strongly reject.burs-dv/kir
