6 Martabak Manis shops in S'pore that offer pick-up & delivery

SINGAPORE – To be completely honest, this started as a directory of places that deliver cakes for all occasions—such as simply getting through a long week of working from home. But while researching for cakes places I love—and there are many, trust and believe—I had a sudden and unexplained craving for Martabak Manis.

For the uninitiated, Martabak Manis is an Indonesian (and in some ways, Malaysian too) dessert staple that closely resembles what we Singaporeans know as Min Jiang Kueh, albeit usually fluffier and filled with toppings that can make a sweet tooth delirious with joy. I usually have mine with the basic fillings of chocolate rice, sweet corn, and crushed peanuts. But the world of Martabak Manis is vast and it’s varied as operators start getting intensely creative with the iterations on offer.

If this is your first dalliance with Martabak Manis, boy, are you in for a ride.

J Town

J Town deserves top mention due to grit. While retailers all around them in Orchard Road are closing down left, right, and centre, J Town stands tall, unwavering and unaffected by the disaster that is the state of retail. How? By serving honest, unpretentious, and most importantly, affordable food.

Diners flock here mainly for the Bakmie Ayam Cabe Ijo (S$7.50), a fiery plate of green chilli chicken noodle or the Mie Goreng (S$6.50). But I know their real draw is their Martabak Manis, often sold out come dinner time. If you’ve made the rookie mistake of not calling in to pre-order your portion, then prepare to be disappointed. But if luck is on your side, go ahead and order the Martabak Special OvoPOP (S$10.90/serving for 2) or the Keju (S$7.90/serving for 2) for a great denouement to a satisfying dinner. Or else, get the Campur Mix (S$8.90/serving for 2) that comes filled with a mixture of chocolate, cheese, and ground peanuts.

Apart from Martabak Manis, My Home Cafe also serves other toothsome Indonesian fares like the Perkedel Bomb (S$4.90), the spicy Tan Tan Noodle (S$6.90), and the Mie Ayam Lamongan (S$6.90).

Pancake Boss

Pancake Boss is a moniker well-earned as the OG Singapore store dedicated to all things Martabak Manis. They take that badge of honour seriously, as evidenced by a waiting time of at least 30 minutes—and that’s at non-peak hours, mind you. Culinary Martabak Manis creativity is at an all-time high here with options like the Toblerone (S$9.50) or the Boss combo (S$10) that comes with chocolate rice, crushed peanuts, and cheese.

Other worthy mentions include the Red Robin (S$14.80) with its red velvet base, cream cheese, oreo, and the Pink Panther (S$14.30), starting with a strawberry base and filled with white chocolate, strawberry, and cheese. Like its menu, the possibilities here are extensive—even the most discerning Martabak Manis connoisseur would find something they like.

Markozar

For those not in the know, Markozar’s moniker is derived from the portmanteau of ‘Martabak’ and ‘Oza’, which means ‘throne’ in Japanese. They have big dreams of being the Queen of Desserts, and it starts with their Sampler Box Martabak Manis Minis (S$5.80) that comes with smaller portions of their Choco Rush, Good Ol Peanut, Nutella Falls, and Original. It’s a great option for beginner Martabak Manis fans getting their feet wet—and who doesn’t love variety for one price, amirite?

Otherwise, there’s always the Good Ol' Peanut (S$6.80), Cream Corn (S$7.30) or the White Ondeh (S$7.30), filled with cheese, grated Gula Melaka and condensed milk.

Terang Bulan

Terang Bulan is the brain child of Dita who hails from Surabaya, Indonesia. Just by that virtue alone, you can rest assure that the Martabak Manis here is the real McCoy. Have a go at the Party Box (S$9 for four standard flavours; S$12 for four premium flavours; S$10 for two standard and two premium flavours) that promises a quartet of flavours in one round so that you get the best of all worlds. The standard flavours come with options such as chocolate rice, chocolate banana, peanut corn, and cheese oreo, while the premium flavours include options like chocolate cheese, Nutella cheese banana, and milo.

Elsewhere there’s the Red Velvet Edition (S$12.50) that comes with a Red Velvet in a shocking hue of deep maroon topped with cream cheese topping, while the Pandan Edition (S$9.50) starts with an aromatic pandan base with the choice of either cheese or ondeh-ondeh fillings.

Walaku

Walaku is renowned in the Malay/Muslims community for selling plates of fusion cuisine that, while innovative and tasty, pays due respect to the source of its inspiration. It shows in dishes like the Nasi Lemak Kukus/Bakar Platter Set (S$45)—a behemoth of a dish that comes with Nasi Lemak, Ikan Bilis with nuts, spiced chicken, Signature Chicken Wing, smoked duck, grilled salmon, Otah, sambal egg, and sambal kangkong.

They’ve also done a commendable job with their iterations of Martabak Manis, which, though not as varied as the other competitors in this list, sticks to tried and true flavours that are familiar yet still fun. Choose from Red Velvet (S$6.50), Onde Onde (S$6.50). Original Cheese (S$6), Kaya Cheese (S$6) or the Banella; banana and nutella (S$8).
