Face masks are one of the PEOPLE beauty team's favorite skincare categories. And no, it's not just because using one encourages a moment of (much needed) quiet time. The best ones are capable of delivering noticeable results in the amount of time it takes us to binge a show — often times less.

While there are impressive, celeb-approved formulas for brightening, some of the latest formulas are even more targeted than ever before, focusing on lips and the chin. Ahead, check out six masks we can't face the day without, and brilliant tips for masking from a seasoned aesthetician.

To Hydrate Your Lips

Lip masks have had a surge in popularity thanks to how luxe the formulas feel and how well they nourish and plump. “Because the skin on your lips is thin and devoid of oil glands, it’s prone to dryness. Lip masks increase hydration by attracting moisture and by locking it in thanks to their occlusive properties,” says N.J.-based dermatologist Dr. Margarita Lolis.

JLo Beauty founder Jennifer Lopez, 54, talks about how she uses it to give her bedtime routine a boost. "You can wear it during the day like a balm, then apply extra at night as a hydrating mask. There’s nothing like that glossy finish to make you look pulled together. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to look a little glamorous when I climb into bed at night," she says.

Vanessa Hudgens's overnight mask is powered by a few forms of vitamin C to even skin and amp up radiance. But the red carpet regular also uses it during the day (for 10 minutes), when her skin looks dull, to invigorate it.

Aesthetician Autumn Henry (@autumnhenryskincare on Instagram) shares her top tips:

Tailor Your Cleanser: Anyone with oily skin or active breakouts should start with a foaming formula. Normal to dry skin types can use a hydrating gel. If your skin isn’t sensitive, add a powder exfoliator (like Tatcha the Rice Polish) to the cleanser to buff away dead cells.

Incorporate a Toner: An alcohol-free toner will remove residue from cleansing and help keep the skin soft, so it can absorb the mask’s ingredients. If your skin is dry, you can use a hydrating face mist instead.

Add a Layer of Moisture: It might be tempting to let your skin breathe after masking, but you need to apply a nourishing serum and moisturizer to maximize the effects of your treatment.
