Exercise is good for you, whatever time of day you do it. But that doesn't mean there's not an ongoing debate over whether a morning workout or an evening training session is better.

There are pros and cons for both; you're probably more likely to swerve the gym after a full, tiring day at work. But in contrast, if you plan to exercise first thing, you're faced with the torture of that early-morning alarm.

But in the majority, the fitness experts and personal trainers we asked all seemed to prefer a morning workout to any other time of the day. Here's why...

1. "Cardio is better first thing"

"I love to do cardio workouts in the morning to kick start my day, and I use that time to catch up on my favourite marketing podcasts too. If I’m weight training though I will do this later in the day, when I have more fuel in my body for my heavy lifts."

- Krissy Cela, trainer and founder of Tone & Sculpt app

2. "A morning workout helps you sleep better"

"I have little trouble waking up, so I find it beneficial to use my time early in the mornings to exercise rather than doing something else. Exercising first thing in the morning has many benefits and it really gets you energised for the day, increasing productivity and helping you to sleep better at night. There’s no right time to exercise, just pick a time in the day which best suits you, allowing you to be consistent with your training, which is the main thing."

3. "My body and mind feel fresher early in the day"

"I much prefer working out in the morning, I find that my body and mind feel fresher. I workout more because it helps me mentally, having 45 minutes to myself where all I have to do is think about is what movement I am doing right in that moment is really good for my naturally anxious brain. I also find if I workout in the evening I struggle to sleep, which is vital for me as a fitness professional who has many early starts!"

- Liv Darcey, trainer at SoulCycle

4. "I'm just a morning person"

"I am a big fan of training first thing in the morning, simply because I’m a morning person. But unfortunately, life can get in the way sometimes and I can’t always train in the morning, so equally it’s important to be flexible and to be able to train whenever you have the time. In my opinion there is no right or wrong when it comes to the time of day you train, it all comes down to personal preference."

5. "Early morning endorphins boost my mood for the day"

"My preference is always to exercise first thing in the morning. There is nothing better than starting your day with a workout. The feel-good chemicals that come with it – endorphins, serotonin, dopamine – will immediately boost your mood and energy for the day ahead."

- Mercedes Schindler, former professional ballerina and founder of PHYSIQUE fitness studio
