There comes a point in many of our lives when we take a look at our jewelry collection and don’t quite recognize a couple of the pieces there. You might find yourself wondering when exactly you bought those Swarovski crystal earrings with comparatively dim posts, or you may search for an old favorite necklace only to find that it has taken the “old” part of that phrase perhaps too much to heart.
In situations like these, it becomes all too evident that it’s time to break out your cleaning supplies and get to work, because your jewelry could use some TLC. Thankfully, a lot of jewelry doesn’t require special cleaning solutions and tiny brushes specific to the piece. In fact, you may find that what you have around the house is more than up to the challenge (though when it comes to silver pieces, polish really does win the day). With that in mind, here are five of the easiest ways to clean your jewelry.
What you’ll need:
- Baking soda
- Antibacterial cleaner
- Dish soap
- Clean Cloths / Rags
Method 1: Baking Soda + Water
Place the jewelry in a bowl of water and add baking soda. Let it soak for a few minutes, then dry with a cleaning cloth.
Method 2: Antibacterial Cleaner
Pour a few inches of liquid antibacterial cleaner into a glass bowl. Add your jewelry and let it sit for five minutes. As you wait, the buildup should begin to fall off the jewelry and to the bottom of the bowl. Once time is up, rinse under cool water, then pat dry with a clean cloth. Let your jewelry dry before putting it away.
Method 3: Soap + Water
This method is great for gold and platinum jewelry, which can be easily scratched. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush or cloth to scrub away any buildup on the piece. Rinse and dry with a clean cloth.
Method 4: Toothpaste
For jewelry that isn't made of gold or silver, try using toothpaste. Take a soft bristled toothbrush and work the toothpaste over the surface of your jewelry. Rinse and dry with a clean cloth.
Method 5: Vinegar
Soak pure silver pieces in a 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda for at least two hours. Rinse under cold water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
