5 cool things to buy at Surabaya's Juanda Airport

Since its opening earlier this year, Juanda International Airport’s Terminal 2 in Surabaya, East Java, has evolved into more than just a terminal. It’s also a dining destination, which is not exclusively for travelers.

Many Surabayans head to the airport just to eat at Carl’s Jr. burger joint, the first in Surabaya. The commercial area is also getting increasingly interesting with more retailers starting to open for business.

We’ve chosen five interesting items you can find at the terminal; some are available only at the airport.

My Indonesia’s batik elephant
If buying batik cloth sounds too fancy or too serious for a souvenir, how about buying it in a form of a cute elephant?

My Indonesia, which will move to its permanent store just behind the current pop-up store early next year, is selling home accessories and handicraft from Indonesia. It sells elephants, giraffes and owl dolls covered in batik cloth, with different colorful patterns making for very interesting patchwork. The elephants are priced at Rp 69,300 to Rp 115,500, depending on the size.

Tulisan’s travel accessories
As soon as you pass the security checkpoint at the domestic terminal, you’ll see this white pop-up store filled with a colorful display, full of fashion accessories. Tulisan, which in Indonesian means ”handwriting”, is a brand originally from Jakarta. Its collection tells a story painted by artist Melissa Sunjaya.

Its collections include a pouch, passport holders, notebooks and canvas bags - all made by hand and perfect for travelers. A passport holder is priced at Rp 59,000 (US$4.7), a cosmetic pouch at Rp 162,000 and a big cruise bag at Rp 1,647,000.

Richfield’s bomber jacket
You won’t miss this pop-up store next to Tulisan and Express. It’s designed in a military theme, selling men’s clothing inspired by the aviation industry in the US during World War II.

The store is often very crowded with men buying jackets, polo shirts, shoes and accessories. A high-quality bomber jacket is priced at around Rp 1.2 million. It’s not very cheap but it really sells.

Liquor at Surabaya Duty Free
Surabaya Duty Free sells a variety of items on a par with Singapore’s Changi Airport and other major airports around the world. Name your favorite liquor and they will have it, as well as chocolate and perfume.

They also have a holiday discount of up to 50 percent storewide. From the $24 Baileys to the $70 Moet & Chandon, the duty free store is a haven for shoppers looking for the best bargains.

Lacoste at Surabaya Duty Free
This brand is surprisingly very cheap at Surabaya Duty Free. As a comparison, a Lacoste polo shirt is priced at $90 at Changi, while in Surabaya Duty Free its $62. They put the comparison price on display on purpose, along with the product's authenticity guarantee label.
