These 4 Malaysian Developers Are Taking CSR To The Next Level

·4-min read

Malaysia was one of the first countries in Asia to make corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting mandatory for all publicly listed companies. In the 1970s, Malaysia launched the New Economic Policy, a blueprint for all national development plans.

An updated version, the New Economic Model, aligned Malaysia with the United Nations’ global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

One of the stated goals is for the 193 signatory countries to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, and foster innovation. In line with the SDGs, builders are comporting themselves in socially-aware ways, establishing world-class CSR and sustainable development initiatives that endear themselves further to consumers.

Those efforts did not go unnoticed at last year’s PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards (Malaysia). Here are four of Malaysia’s leading developers that continue to demonstrate how integral CSR is to the country’s real estate sector.

OCR Group Berhad

Community ideals are a core component of the OCR Group’s philosophy. Many of its developments — including The Mate@ Damansara Jaya — champion co-working and co-living concepts.

These values were brought to the fore during the COVID-19 pandemic when the group donated thousands of masks to the Malaysian Armed Forces and distributed groceries to vulnerable local communities affected financially during pandemic-related restrictions on movement.

In addition to its CSR initiatives, the established developer, which bagged Special Recognition for CSR and Best Lifestyle Developer at Awards, has also demonstrated a commitment to environmental programmes and sustainable design components, including rainwater harvesting, LED lighting, and natural ventilation.

Matrix Concepts Holdings Berhad

Two decades on from entering the property development business, Matrix Concepts Group celebrated another stellar awards season in 2021.

The Bursa Malaysia-listed firm, which currently counts more than 23,000 residential, commercial, and industrial units in its portfolio, took home Best Township Developer, Real Estate Personality of the Year for its group managing director Ho Kong Soon, Special Recognition in ESG and Special Recognition for CSR at the Awards’ virtual gala.

Within the community, Matrix Concepts Holdings has contributed to a wide range of community-related causes to help those in need affected by the pandemic.

Since the first lockdown in March 2020, the developer has contributed more than MYR 11.5 million to various organisations and communities through various CSR initiatives, including MYR 400,000 to the Matrix Concepts Food Bank programme this year.

Tropicana Corporation Berhad

With more than 60 projects under its belt, Tropicana remains one of the most prolific developers in Malaysia.

In 2021, the firm bagged its third Best Developer (Malaysia) award, in addition to accolades in Best High End Landed Development for Tropicana Aman – Freesia Residences, Best Mid End Condo/Apartment Development (Central) and Best Retail Development for Tropicana Metropark – SouthPlace Shoppes, Special Recognition in Sustainable Design and Construction, Special Recognition in ESG, and Special Recognition in CSR categories.

Focused on creating more compassionate and supportive communities, the company coordinates CSR activities through its Tropicana Foundation. Other causes include raising funds for the National Council of the Blind Malaysia and an elderly care home.

The biggest community contribution by Tropicana Corporation in the last year has been the provision of medical equipment during the Covid-19 pandemic. Beyond this, global and local causes are supported, from food banks to education, recycling programs, and charitable organisations that help vulnerable children and those with special needs.

Attention-grabbing contemporary facades, two- and three-storey retail unit layouts and excellent accessibility were enough to convince the APA(M) judging panel to name KCC City Business Park, Muar Best Retail Development at the 2021 virtual gala.

Strategically located in Muar along the Jalan Bakri, connectivity is paramount to this vibrant business park. It is surrounded by a host of key amenities, including an expansive car park. It offers shoppers convenient access to the array of F&B outlets, restaurants, banks, boutiques, conveniences stores, and pharmacies housed within the 497,529-square-foot development.

The developer’s reputation goes beyond the business side of things. In the last couple of years alone, KCC REALTY has driven a series of CSR initiatives such as blood donations, a crime prevention campaign for children in Johor, and sponsorship of voluntary work at a Selangor orphanage to promote positive social change within communities that are in need.
