PEOPLE contacted the Chinese Foreign Ministry for comment on the incident, but did not receive an immediate response.

According to CNN, police arrested and identified the suspect as a 55-year-old man with the last name of Cui.

"Cui collided into a foreigner while walking in Beishan Park, and then stabbed the foreigner and three fellow foreigners with a knife, as well as a Chinese tourist who tried to stop him," Jilin city police said in a social media statement translated by Reuters.

CNN reported that the instructors had been taking part in a partnership program with Beihua University in Jilin, in northeastern China.

Videos and photos shared on social media showed a woman and two men lying on the ground at the park. One of the men was pictured covered in blood.

Per The New York Times, foreign ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, said the victims received treatment at a hospital after the stabbing.

Meanwhile, Iowa state Rep. Adam Zabner confirmed to CNN that his brother, David Zabner, was one of the four instructors who had been attacked.

“I’m just extremely grateful that my brother is okay and that he survived this attack,” he said of his brother, who was on his second visit to China with Cornell. “The hope of my family is to get my brother back home as soon as possible and get them healthy. And we really just want to thank the US State Department for all their help, and also our federal delegation from Iowa who have been particularly helpful.”

He added that his brother is “doing well” and has “been stitched up and seems to be recovering.”
