32-Year-Old Woman Arrested After Dead Body Was Found in Her Car Following Accident on Minnesota Highway

"It was immediately apparent that the death was not a result of the motor vehicle accident,” police shared

A 32-year-old woman was arrested in Minnesota after a dead body was found in her car following a single-vehicle accident, according to police.

The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office shared on social media that officers arrested Margot Lewis, 32, for the charge of interference with a dead body.

The sheriff's office shared that officers discovered the dead body after responding to a “single-vehicle accident” on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90, near the Highway 42 Exit in Olmsted County around 7 a.m. local time on Saturday, June 22.

Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), Eyota Fire Department and other first responders arrived at the scene where they found Lewis outside of her car “being tended to” by a bystander.

When police checked to see if there was any one else in her car, they found a deceased 35-year-old woman in the backseat, according to the release.

“The condition of the deceased was suspicious, and it was immediately apparent that the death was not a result of the motor vehicle accident,” police said in a statement.

Police have identified the woman, but her name is being withheld as they work to notify her family. They also did not give any additional details into what led officers to believe the woman in the backseat had been deceased at the time of the crash.

“Olmsted County Sheriff's Office extends sincere condolences to the friends and family of the deceased,” the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Police said Lewis was transported to the hospital in an ambulance and was “medically cleared” before she was placed under arrest. She was later transported to the Adult Detention Center.

The sheriff's office said that the investigation into this case was still “ongoing” and said that “no further information would be released at this time.”

The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on the incident.

According to local outlet Post Bulletin and ABC News, Lewis is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, June 25.
