The 30 Liverpool transfer targets that Jurgen Klopp will be watching at the 2022 World Cup: Fernandez, Moukoko…
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a close eye on the World Cup as a number of their alleged transfer targets will be in action in Qatar.
The Reds have endured a difficult start to the 2022/23 season and they find themselves sixth in the Premier League after 14 games.
Klopp is keen to add new players to his squad in the January transfer window and the Reds have reportedly been looking at dozens of targets.
We’ve taken a look at the 30 players who are in World Cup squads and have been linked with Liverpool in recent months.
Zeno Debast
Branded ‘the new Vincent Kompany’, Debast came through Anderlecht’s academy and made his first-team debut last year before establishing himself as one of the first names on the team sheet.
His impressive performances have caught the eye of Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, and he’ll be hoping to add to his two international caps at the World Cup.
According to 90min, the 19-year-old centre-back has also impressed Liverpool’s scouts and the reports on him have been excellent.
Victor Nelsson
Armel Bella-Kotchap
Antonio Silva
A Benfica academy graduate, Silva won the UEFA Youth League last season and has burst onto the first-team scene in 2022/23.
The 18-year-old centre-back has made 18 appearances for the senior side but is yet to taste defeat, and he has earned plenty of plaudits.
“The first goal is from that young defender I have highlighted a couple of weeks ago, I told you all about him, and there he is, Antonio Silva,” Jamie Carragher said after Silva scored in a 4-3 win over Juventus.
“I mentioned his defensive prowess. But goalscoring there as well. He is going to be a superstar.”
Despite being uncapped at senior international level, he has been named in Portugal’s World Cup squad and will be hoping to form a partnership with fellow Benfica academy graduate Ruben Dias.
A report from Portuguese outlet O Jogo claims that Liverpool and Manchester United are two of the clubs who are monitoring Silva’s development. Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed that ‘top clubs’ are tracking the defender.

Declan Rice
Moises Caicedo
Marcelo Brozovic
Guido Rodriguez
Since joining Real Betis from Mexican side Club America in January 2020, Rodriquez has gone from strength to strength and helped them win the Copa del Rey in 2021/22.
The 28-year-old, who can play at the base of a midfield three or either side in a box-to-box role, has also won the Copa America and the Finalissima with Argentina and will now be hoping to add a World Cup winners’ medal to his trophy cabinet.
According to reports in Spain, Liverpool and Everton have both been impressed by Rodriguez’s ‘impeccable performances’ this season and are leading the race for his signature.
Betis have financial issues and will reportedly accept bids in the region of £22m but his valuation may increase if he carries his impressive form into the World Cup.
Bruno Guimaraes
Frenkie de Jong
Marcos Llorente
Enzo Fernandez
Fernandez joined Benfica from River Plate in an £8.6m deal in the summer transfer window and has made a seamless transition to European football.
He’s registered three goals and five assists in 24 appearances and helped Benfica finish above Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League group.
The 21-year-old has just three caps for Argentina but is expected to play a key role at the World Cup following Giovani Lo Celso’s injury.
According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Liverpool ‘don’t rule out’ moving for Fernandez in either January or next summer. Sport also revealed that the Reds are firmly in the race for the midfielder.
Youri Tielemans
Matheus Nunes
Adrien Rabiot
Mason Mount
Jude Bellingham
Bellingham has starred for Borussia Dortmund over the last two-and-a-half years and is seeking a breakthrough on football’s biggest stage.
The England international, who has 17 caps for his country, has already been linked with Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid.
According to Football Insider, Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have both urged their England team-mate to join Liverpool.
A bidding war is expected to commence next summer and Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke will hold talks with Bellingham when he returns from the World Cup.
“We will hold talks now, as soon as Qatar is over, and then we’ll have a fundamental talk about what he would like,” Watzke said.
“He just needs to tell us if he’d like to stay or if he’d like to go. In both cases we’ll talk about it very pleasantly and reasonably together. In general we can imagine that he’d stay with us, but we can’t behave as if this topic wasn’t on the table.
“If he says ‘I’d like to do something else,’ then the really big [clubs] in Europe will be there and we can’t afford to fight financially.”
Federico Valverde
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
Jeremy Doku
Youssoufa Moukoko
Despite only being 17 years old, Moukoko has already registered 11 goals and eight assists in 59 first-team appearances for Borussia Dortmund.
He is regarded as one of European football’s hottest prospects but was still a surprise inclusion in Germany’s squad for the World Cup.
The striker is the youngest player at the tournament and will be vying for the No.9 role with Karim Adeyemi and Niclas Fullkrug.
According to Football Insider, Jurgen Klopp has been blown away with the teenager’s progress and Liverpool are keeping close tabs on him.
He’s also been linked with Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona, PSG and Real Madrid but Sport claim that Liverpool are at the front of the queue to sign Moukoko, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
Kylian Mbappe
Joao Felix
Memphis Depay
Noah Okafor
Alexis Vega
A name that might not be familiar to most Liverpool fans, Vega currently plies his trade at Mexican side Chivas.
The pacey left-winger has seven direct goal contributions in 2022/23 also been in great form for Mexico, scoring three goals in his last appearances for the national team.
According to GiveMeSport, he is being tracked by Liverpool, as well as Real Madrid, Chelsea and Wolves. The report also adds that he’s hoping to ‘showcase himself’ on the big stage and a good World Cup could certainly be the springboard for a big move.
Marcus Thuram
Son Heung-min
Rafael Leao
Kamaldeen Sulemana
Sulemana has caught the eye during his first 16 months at Rennes and his performances have seen him dubbed the ‘new Sadio Mane’, which is huge praise for the 20-year-old.
The left-winger was nominated for the 2022 Golden Boy award and will now be trying to help Ghana escape a World Cup group that also consists of Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.
Spanish outlet Nacional claim that Klopp wants Sulemana and Liverpool are planning a €35m bid as they look to fight off interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
