Lighten up on calories, but not on flavor.
If you've ever made the choice to eat a little healthier, then it's likely you've come across the one big drawback to ground beef. Ground beef is a delicious and versatile dinner ingredient, but it's awfully high in fat, and especially saturated fat—the stuff that the American Heart Association recommends limiting.
Luckily there are plenty of alternatives. One of our favorites is ground turkey. It's incredibly low in fat, high in protein, and just as versatile as beef. (We also love ground chicken, which is similar!) One drawback to cooking with a low-fat ground meat, however, is that if you simply toss it in a ground beef recipe without other changes, then the dish may turn out dry, without the extra fat to provide flavor and moisture. And if the rest of the dish isn't healthy, then you didn't save much in the way of calories or fat.
Luckily we've put together a couple dozen healthy dinner recipes using ground turkey, all of which are easy enough to make even on a busy weeknight, and delicious enough that you'll quickly want to put it in your regular dinner rotation. We've got pasta dishes packed with flavor, rich, savory meatloaf, smart takes on on sloppy Joes, and of course tacos and chili and Bolognese enough to keep the whole family satisfied. And all of these dishes are flavorful enough that your family just might not even realize that they're eating healthier.
