22-Year-Old Hiker Killed After Wind Blows Tree onto Him at Yosemite, Officials Say
A woman was also injured and airlifted to the hospital
An Australian man was killed earlier this month after a tree fell on him while hiking at Yosemite National Park in California, authorities reportedly said.
The victim was identified by the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office as Harry Partington, 22, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, SFGate and the Union Democrat.
National Park Service (NPS) spokesperson Scott Gediman told SFGate that Partington was on the park’s Four Mile Trail when the incident occurred on Oct. 8 around 2:30 p.m. local time.
“There was some wind and a wind gust blew a tree down,” Gediman told the Chronicle.

Gediman said, per the Chronicle, that officials from Mariposa County will conduct an autopsy on Partington to determine the cause of his death. He also advised that park visitors should constantly “be aware of their surroundings," SFGate reported.
PEOPLE has contacted the NPS and the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office for additional information about the incident.

Kelly Kennedy Bentley, a visitor to the park at the time of incident, told the Union Democrat that she initially thought first responders were there for her husband and family members who were on the trail, while Bentley was waiting for them at the trailhead.
She later received a text from her husband saying that they were okay.
“My kids remember about 30 emergency personnel on the trail, paramedics and firemen, and rescue personnel,” Bentley told the newspaper. “The trail was closed. I saw the helicopter up there at least twice.”

Per the Yosemite National Park’s website, the Four Mile Trail measures a distance of 4.8 miles one way to Glacier Point, and its level of difficulty is described as “strenuous.”
The park notes that the trail offers “spectacular views of Yosemite Valley, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, and, eventually, [the rock monument] Half Dome.”
The park’s recommendations for a safe experience on the trail include starting the hike early, as it gets hot during the mid-day; staying on the trail and not cutting switchbacks; and being mindful that the trail is partially paved and has loose sands.
