Grammys 2025 nominations live: Charli XCX up for Album of the Year with Beyonce and Taylor Swift

Grammys 2025 nominations live: Charli XCX up for Album of the Year with Beyonce and Taylor Swift

The nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards have been announced, with several milestones reached by some of the world’s biggest artists.

Beyonce shattered a record to become the most nominated artist of all time, with a total of 99 nominations throughout her career. She was previously tied with her husband, Jay-Z, at 88, but moved ahead after leading the 2025 nominations with 11 nods, including Album of the Year for her country-influenced Cowboy Carter.

Taylor Swift received yet another Album of the Year nod, this time for her latest hit album, The Tortured Poets Department, which pulls her out of a tie with Barbra Streisand and places her as the woman with the most nominations in the category.

Other artists who will be vying for Album of the Year include 2024’s breakthrough star Chappell Roan with her debut, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and Sabrina Carpenter with her sixth record, Short n’ Sweet.

British star Charli XCX is a also up for her critically adored, trend-setting album Brat, while RAYE received a deserved nod for Best New Artist.

Hip-hop star Kendrick Lamar was nominated for both Record and Song of the Year for his diss track “Not Like Us”, which ties him with Jay-Z for the most nods in those categories by a rapper.

Some early takeaways so far

16:18 , Roisin O'Connor

It seems the Grammys voting academy might have reached Taylor Swift saturation point, as the pop titan is far less dominant in the 2025 nominations as she was for this year’s awards show.

So far, she’s only got two big nominations and both of them are collaborations: her single “Fortnight” ft Post Malone, and her guest feature on Gracie Abrams’ song “Us”.

At the moment, Beyonce seems to be dominating thanks to her album Cowboy Carter, along with Chappell Roan for her album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, Kendrick Lamar and Billie Eilish.

Who do we want to see nominated?

15:33 , Roisin O'Connor

It feels as though there are a few dead certs that will end up in this year’s Big Four categories at the Grammy Awards.

A reminder of the “big four”: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist.

For the unitiated and because it is a bit confusing: Song of the Year recognises the composition of a song and the writers behind it, while Record of the Year deals with the artists, producers and engineers who contributed to that song.

Personally I think it would be a shock if Taylor Swift isn’t nominated for a record-breaking seventh Album of the Year nod, for 2024’s The Tortured Poets Department. While I’d argue the album itself suffers from being overly long (in a big way), Swift is a Grammys darling and, regardless of length, Tortured Poets contains some of her finest songwriting to date. “Fortnight” could get a nomination for Song of the Year and possibly also Record of the Year, and I imagine Best Pop Solo Perforance and Best Pop Vocal Album, too.

There are two artists who could sweep the Big Four categories: Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan. Both are likely to end up with Best New Artist nominations (and subsequently reigniting the age-old debate of “new”, given Carpenter is on her sixth album, Short n’ Sweet. This, and Roan’s debut The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, are strong contenders for Album of the Year thanks to critical raves for each, and strong commercial performances to boot.

Carpenter’s mega hit single “Espresso” is likely to end up in both the Song and Record of the Year categories, as is Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!”.

It’s likely that all four categories will be dominated by US artists this year, but one singer flying the flag for the UK could be Charli XCX, who rose to a higher level of international fame thanks to her trend-setting and critically adored sixth album, Brat.

Beyonce should get a nod for her country-influenced album Cowboy Carter, along with Kendrick Lamar for his incendiary Drake diss track, “Not Like Us”.

The 2025 Grammy nominees will be announced during a video stream live on the Grammy website and the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel on Friday at 8am Pacific and 11am Eastern (4pm GMT), kicking off with a pre-show 15 minutes earlier.

How the 2024 Grammy Awards unfolded

14:41 , Roisin O'Connor

It was one of the most memorable Grammys in years. Clearly, organisers felt they had to make up for the deflating 2023 ceremony, where Harry Styles skipped away with Album of the Year after we were promised a rematch between Adele and Beyonce.

They managed it, and then some: this truly was the Year of the Women. After a glittering run on the red carpet, where many nominees appeared to turn up dressed as Grammy Awards (a lot of bronze and gold this year), the ceremony opened with a spectacular medley of hits from British pop star Dua Lipa. By this point, the pre-telecast show had already seen early prizes handed out to indie supergroup Boygenius, Billie Eilish and Kylie Minogue.

Trevor Noah, hosting for the fourth consecutive year, proved himself an ally. He defended Taylor Swift from grouchy NFL fans by flipping the joke and threatening to put the camera on retired American football fans. Swift, who famously sent a wintery glare in comedian Jo Koy’s direction when he dared to make a joke at her expense at the Golden Globes, seemed delighted by Noah by comparison.

2024 report: Taylor Swift becomes first artist to win Grammy for Album of the Year four times

11:46 , Roisin O'Connor

In February this year, Taylor Swift became the first person in Grammy Awards history to win Album of the Year four times.

The American artist received the coveted prize from Celine Dion, who made a surprise appearance at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles where the ceremony was being held.

The US megastar secured the top gong of the night with her 10th studio album Midnights, having previously won for Fearless in 2009, again six years later for 1989, and most recently for Folklore in 2020.

As she collected the award from Celine Dion, she said: “Oh god, no. I don’t know man.”

She praised her friend and long-term collaborator Jack Antonoff as a “once in a generation” producer and her fellow nominee Lana Del Rey as a “legacy artist” and a “legend in her prime right now.”

“I would love to tell you that this is the best moment in my life, but I feel this happy when I finish a song or when I crack the code to a bridge that I love or when I’m shotlisting a music video, or when I’m rehearsing with my dancers or my band or getting ready to go to Tokyo to play a show,” she said.

“For me, the award is the work. All I want to do is keep being able to do this. I love it so much. It makes me so happy.

“It makes me unbelievably blown away that it makes some people happy who voted for this award too. All I want to do is keep doing this. So thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to do what I love so much... mind blown”.
